“Hey,” she scolds, gently peeling my hands from my face. Her smile is sad. “Gracie Hutton and pathetic shouldn’t even exist in the same universe, babe. Fuck any guy who makes you feel less than what you’re worth.”

“Ava, I did that already. That’s how I got in this situation.” I half laugh, half choke.

“You know what I mean. If this guy—I refuse to say his name out of respect for your brother—is too blind to see what’s shining right in front of him, then he isn’t worth it. When he realizes exactly what he lost, you’ll be there grinning at the helpless look on his face. So will I.”

“Hello, ladies. Are you ready to order?”

Ava nearly jumps out of her skin as the waiter appears seemingly out of nowhere, while my eyes bulge and my hand smacks the table.

“Do you not make any sound when you walk? Holy crap,” Ava swears, a hand on her chest.

The waiter laughs, and I notice that he has a nice smile, like one you would see on a TV commercial promoting toothpaste. There’s a beauty mark on his cheek that seems to be in the same place as a deep dimple. He’s cute—the type of guy I would have been into two years ago.

Like I did when I first ordered our drinks, I realize how attractive he is. And it has the same effect on me now as it did then.

Said effect being nothing. Surprise, surprise, the Tyler curse is as strong as ever.

“My bad. I’m sorry, ladies.” The waiter grins right at me, his eyes an intense shade of light blue that seems all wrong.

I muster up a smile, not wanting to come off as rude, but it’s not very convincing. Ava clears her throat, finally capturing his attention.

“Maybe we’ll just get some nachos. What do you say, Gracie?”

Her use of my name doesn’t slip past me, and I glare at her.

The waiter—Phillip, according to the name written on the corner of his shirt—looks back at me now. He flashes me a lopsided grin and steps up closer to the table, as if he was invited.

“The nachos are one of my personal favourites,” he says.

“Nachos are fine,” I answer before bringing my cup back toward me and sucking back my drink.

“Great. I’ll go ring that through for you.”

“Yeah, great,” I sigh when he spins around way too enthusiastically and jots away. “I don’t want to be set up, Ava. I’m too jaded from one asshole to try and get with another.”

“Hey, Phillip doesn’t seem like an asshole.”

I give her a pointed look. “Not the point. Now, are you going to give me advice, or do I need to expand my outreach and find someone else?”

Ava rolls her eyes. “Good luck. We both know I’m the only person you want to talk to about this, even if I shouldn’t be.”

“Okay, then tell me what to do, Oh Great One, because I’m losing my mind here. How do you move on from someone who has made it so abundantly clear they don’t want you?”

Ava slouches in her seat and exhales a heavy breath. There’s a kind of sympathy in her eyes that makes the hurt in my chest expand.

I barely catch the brief flicker of her eyes toward Phillip before she says, “You do the only thing you can do. Get over him by getting under someone else.”
