“What?” I screech.

The coffee shop has gone silent. People stare at us with wide eyes. I have no idea where she got that from.

“You lied, telling us you had a degree in computer engineering, but you didn’t even finish college.”

My blood ices. I swallow thickly, staring at her.

“What do you have to say for yourself?” She demands with a sneer.

She looks like an angry dog ready to attack. Her lips roll back, exposing sharp teeth she’d use to shred me.

“Mrs. Remington, I don’t think this is the place—“ Lex begins but is interrupted.

“Oh, shut up.” She waves her hand, practically slapping Lex in the face.

Lex leans back enough to be missed. My eyes widen more, threatening to jump out of their sockets.

“You lied to us, to my son. No wonder you never sent your resume to my husband’s friend. All I needed to do was make a quick phone call, and I got the information I needed.”

My blood boils now. I push back my chair and stand, staring at her with anger.

“Did you call my university and demand private information?“ My nostrils flare.

“Sweetheart, nothing’s private when you have money. Besides, asking about someone’s degree is public information.” She smirks like the devil herself.

My fists clench, and I step closer to her.

“If I were you, I’d learn the entire story before you go accusing people of lying. It’s none of your business what I do.”

“It is when it involves my son and my money. It’s clear Tristan isn’t prepared to receive his trust fund so long as he’s with someone like you. Gold-digging . . .“ she trails off, shaking her head in disgust.

I take a deep breath and freeze. Tristan needs that money. I stare at her, but she doesn’t back down.

“Mrs. Remington,” Elizabeth walks out of the kitchen. “I’m not sure what is going on here, but if you have family matters to discuss, this isn’t the place. I suggest you do so privately. I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

My eyes widen as I look at her.

“Do you know the class of people you employ?” She lifts her brows as if Elizabeth is an idiot.

“Of course I do.” My boss crosses her arms.

“Then you’d know her resume is probably a lie. She doesn’t have a college degree, and she thinks she can get away with lying.”

“I know the qualifications of my employee, and I’d appreciate you not questioning the way I run my business. Now, please leave if you’re not going to purchase anything.” Elizabeth stands her ground.

I look over at Lex, whose face is a mixture of confusion and anger.

Mrs. Remington huffs and lifts her chin, directing her icy words at me.

“I’ll make sure my son knows the type of woman you are, you gold-digger.”

I shake my head. My jaw is clenched to the point that I’m starting to feel pain in the back of my head. When she finally leaves, I release a deep breath and sag onto my chair.

“Are you okay?” Lex asks.

I shake my head, hiding my face. It’s one time I wish I had long hair so I could shield myself from others.

“Sage,” Elizabeth places her hand on my shoulder. “What was that about?”
