Right now, I don’t care so much what she thinks about me but what she’ll do to Tristan because of those opinions.

“I’m going to go home. I’m so sorry that you had to witness that.” I bite my lower lip and pull my eyebrows tight.

“No need to apologize. Like Elizabeth said, it wasn’t your fault. Unfortunately, I’m not unfamiliar with the Remingtons’ strong opinions and harsh words.”

“Do you think they’re some of those people who will one day wake up and realize their wrongdoings?”

“I don’t know. Personally, they need to be really sorry in order for me to trust them after all the garbage they’ve said and done to me. But hey, miracles happen.” Lex lifts a shoulder.

“Yeah.” I nod. “I’m going to go. Thank you for coming with me, and I’m sorry again you had to deal with that. I hate the way she treats you.” I shake my head.

“Don’t stress about it.” She pats my arm. “It’s not your responsibility. Hudson can’t even get through to them, which is why he doesn’t talk to his parents. Go home, relax, and wrap those amazing presents.” She smiles, and I wonder where she gets the strength to show genuine happiness.

“Thanks.” I jump in my car before she walks away toward hers.

Today turned out to be a disaster. I knew Mrs. Remington was different when we ran into her at All You Need, but I assumed it was due to Lex’s presence. I guess she was scheming all along and found out the answers she was looking for.

All I want to do is go home and forget this ever happened, but I can’t. My mind won’t stop racing with what-if scenarios and possibilities that will ruin or set Tristan back in his career.

Even if he told his parents the truth, I doubt that would help his cause. It’s best if he pretends he had no idea, and I stop seeing him. That’s the only logical solution I can find.

Even if it breaks my heart, it’s my own doing for getting involved in this in the first place.

I wake up to my ringing phone. Groggy, I groan and turn over in bed, blindly reaching out for it. My body feels heavy with sleep. I could stay in bed for the rest of the day, maybe even through tomorrow.

My eyes blink closed when the bright phone screen comes into view. I peek one eye open and see Tristan’s name flashing across the screen.

“Ugh.” I fall back on the bed and cover my face with my arm.

I came home and went straight to bed, needing a nap. I’m not even sure how long I’ve been out. The phone stops ringing and starts up again.

Oh, no. It’s past the time we were going to meet for dinner. I answer, clearing my throat before speaking.

I had forgotten he had a romantic dinner planned, and now I feel even more awful.

“Hello?”

“Sage, hey. Are you okay?” His words come out rushed.

“Sorry, I fell asleep and am just waking up.”

“Are you feeling sick? Do you need something?” His concern makes my eyes prickle.

“No, I’m just tired. Do you mind if we postpone dinner?” I chew on my bottom lip and blink away the tears.

“Sure. Want me to come over? I can bring you something.”

“No, it’s okay. I just want to go back to sleep.” I swallow thickly.

It doesn’t seem that he’s heard about his mom’s confrontation, or he would have brought it up.

I need to decide what I’m going to do, but I believe Mrs. Remington when she says she won’t transfer the fund to Tristan so long as he’s dating me. That only leaves me with one choice.

“Call if you need anything. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Okay.” I’m a coward, but I can’t build the courage to break up with him right now, especially over the phone. If he finds out the real reason, he won’t accept it.

Taking a deep breath, I hang up and close my eyes again, clutching my pillow in the fetal position.
