“I didn’t think it’d lead to this,” I confess. “I never thought I’d actually like Tristan as more than a friend. I also underestimated his parents.” I press my lips together, looking into my coffee.

If only it held all the answers to life’s problems.

“Those people . . .” My dad shakes his head. “If I could have a word with them,” he seethes.

“No. It’s not worth it. And Tristan is nothing like them.” I feel the need to defend him.

It wouldn’t be fair to paint him as the villain to my parents when he has been nothing but kind, supportive, and caring. He has main character energy.

Tears well in my eyes. I sniff and look away, blinking rapidly to dry the moisture building in my eyes.

“Sage, sweetie.” My dad’s hand lands on mine. “We just want you to be happy and healthy. Your mom and I are concerned, with reason, and want to make sure you’re doing everything possible to stay stable.”

I look over at him with a frown.

“I already broke up with him. What more do you want?”

“I never wanted you to be unhappy. Nor did I tell you to break up with Tristan if being with him is what you truly want.”

“I know.” I shake my head. “Sorry. I’m just emotional.”

My parents never advised me to end things with Tristan. That was all my doing so he wouldn’t lose a chance at the money he deserves. If his mother makes good on her threat, he’ll lose it all because of me.

My dad sighs and smiles softly. “Be happy, baby girl. That’s what I want. It’s all your mother and I have ever wanted.”

“If only it were that easy.”

“It could be.” He tilts his head and looks at me with a careful expression. “We’ll pay the bills together like we’ve been doing for the past few years. You’re our daughter. We would never make you take that burden on yourself.” He squeezes my hand.

“I know, Dad. I just wanted to help, and the opportunity presented itself.” I shrug.

“I get it, and in your position, I probably would’ve done the same, but not at the risk of your well-being.”

“I know.” I smile, tears blurring my vision.

My dad leans over and hugs me tightly. I sigh and allow him to comfort me. I may have lost Tristan, but I have the best parents in the world.

After seeing the way Mr. and Mrs. Remington work, I appreciate my family a lot more. I’ll never worry about blackmail and sneakiness. My parents are honest.

“I’m going to finish this and get a bit more rest. I hope to be back at work tomorrow.” The idea of returning to the coffee shop makes me nervous for numerous reasons.

Although Elizabeth assured me it was okay, I am ready to go back to my routine. I have no idea if Julie will be all right with my absence, even if Elizabeth is. Not to mention people’s reactions to seeing me after Mrs. Remington’s outburst.

“Get rest.” He kisses the top of my head and leans back.

The doorbell rings, and we both look up with furrowed brows.

“Are you expecting anyone?” I ask him.

“Nope, I’ll check who it is. Finish breakfast.”

My stomach drops when the familiar voice hits my ears. Lex appears in the kitchen with my dad.

“You have a visitor,” he says, smiling.

My eyes widen, and I look down at my rumpled pajamas. I have morning breath, too.

“Uhhh . . . hey,” I say.
