He didn't make me wait. He slid into me before my orgasm had fully abated, the sudden feeling of fullness sending the pleasure spiraling even higher. My inner walls pulsed around him and I clutched him tight as he moved within me.

"Jesus, River," he breathed, his rhythm already fast, his hips sliding against mine. My heartbeat was thundering, blood pulsing in my veins. As soon as I caught my breath I gripped him, pushing him until I was on top, knees spread wide and hands braced on his shoulders.

He groaned at the new angle and I took over the pace. His hands came up, pulling me down until he could bury his face in my breasts, nipping and sucking until I forgot where his body ended and mine began. He overwhelmed my senses, the taste of his skin, the pressure of his hands on my hips, the sounds he made. When at last his movements grew jerky and he drew me tight to his chest, his own climax bursting through him, I was right behind him, holding tight as though I never meant to let go.

When his movements slowed at last, I drew away, propping myself up with my elbows braced against his chest. His lips curved in a sleepy, sated smile.

"Hi," he said, reaching up to trail his fingertips along my cheek.

I closed my eyes and tipped my head into his touch. "Hi," I murmured. "That was nice."

He chuckled. "High praise." Then he paused, his voice turning cautious. "Any notes from…anyone else?"

Lilin's presence was like a whisper from another room, or the sound of a familiar song playing through a closed window. I probed further, trying to hear her, but she retreated again and again, resisting my attempts. "No," I said at last. "She’s…hiding, or something."

Theo let out a breath, some of the tension fading from his expression. "That's considerate."

I rolled to one side, curling against him with my head on his shoulder. "I hope she doesn't expect me to return the favor," I said darkly.

"Hey." Theo brushed my lower lip with the pad of his thumb. "What did we say about freaking out?"

I made a face. "I forgot."

"Probably means you need to go back to sleep," he said, and kissed my forehead.

"I've been sleeping for hours," I protested, yawning hugely.

"Agreed," Theo said, pulling me closer and snuggling his nose into my hair. "Let's get up…get some coffee…maybe go for a quick jog…”

"Teddy,” I mumbled.

"Mm?"

I closed my eyes and wrapped my arm around his waist. "Shut up," I said.

When I woke again, the bed was empty, and the light beaming through the gap in the curtains was the bright yellow of midday. I sat up. "Theo?"

No answer. I looked around for a note, but didn't see anything. His shoes were missing.

"Theo?" I said again, standing up. I pulled my underwear and jeans on and slid my feet into my boots, feeling my heart start to race. "Are you here?"

Silence.

Oh God. First Luca, now Theo. Where could he be? I grabbed my phone and bag, almost dropping both in my hurry to get to the door. I had to get Vanessa—she'd help me search for him. What if she was gone, too? What would I—

The door opened. "Hey," Theo said, stepping inside.

My knees, which had only a moment before been prepared to spring into heroic action, completely stopped working. I sat down hard in one of the chairs. "Jesus, Theo."

He set a white paper bag onto the desk and came to my side. "Whoa," he said, pressing a reassuring hand to my back. "What's wrong?"

I put my face in my hands. "Nothing," I groaned. "Don't worry about it. I'm fine. I'm totally great."

"Yeah, you seem totally great." He pressed one fingertip to my forehead, gently tipping my head up until I met his gaze.

I looked away. "I just…I woke up and you were…it sounds stupid." My heart rate was slowly coming back down to normal. I swallowed hard. "You were gone, and with Luca being taken, you know…I kind of…panicked."
