“Are you happy now?” she said, still in that blank tone.

I dragged myself up beside her, baring my teeth in a snarl. “Yes, don’t I look happy? Obviously this is exactly what I wanted to happen.”

She shook her head. “I should never have been so quick to dismiss your nature. You’re impulsive, just as I knew you would be. You don’t think. Didn’t you ever wonder how Julian came into knowledge like this in the first place? How powerful he might be? No, of course not. You just looked at him and saw a young human. He must be harmless, right? And now look—”

I saw the warning shimmer as I cut into her tirade, but I ignored it. “I’m sorry you clearly have no idea what it’s like to make poor decisions and have to suffer the consequences. He was obviously trying to right his wrong. He wanted to help them—how was I supposed to know it would fail?”

She stepped closer to me, and lightning flashed overhead. “Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because it’s dark magic. It’s forbidden for a reason. Just because he had good intentions doesn’t mean there’s no harm to be done. And if you hadn’t encouraged him—”

“You do realize,” I snarled, my face inches from hers, “that we have the same mandate, right? Despite all of your pompous judgements and preconceived notions about my nature, you do at least know we are both sworn to uphold the Equilibrium? To protect and balance humans?”

“What is your point?” she demanded with a condescending curl of her lip. The energy was crackling audibly between us now. I wanted to wipe that expression off her face.

“My point is that although I know you’re prejudiced against demons, perhaps you don’t need to blame me for everything that—”

“I never said this was your fault—”

“But it IS my fault,” I roared, and with that the energy finally spiked. There was a terrible grinding sound, followed by a blinding flash of lightning and a clap of thunder so loud my ears rang in the silence that followed.
