“Who says I want that?”

“I want you,” he says bluntly. “We all do. All the time.”

“How can you just admit that?” I blurt out. “It gives me power over you.”

“Maybe,” Cain acknowledges. “But not as much as you might think. There are other ways for people to have power over you. You’re our mate, which means why should we bother hiding how we feel? We want you and besides…” He smirks. “There’s a lot of fun that we can get up to.”

I suppose I get what he’s saying, but if I admit how much I’m attracted to these men, it could mean that they’re right about the fated mates business. Or at least, they’ll think that they’re right. And they could think that I’ll do what they want just because I want to have sex with them.

“How did you know that he was going to betray us?” I ask, desperate to get us back into safer territory. “How did you know he would… try to bind me or hurt me?”

When the guy first grabbed me, I’d thought he was trying to yank me out of the way or help me. How did Cain know when I didn’t?

“I don’t trust anyone,” Cain replies. “I just assume everyone will betray us.”

“I shouldn’t have let my guard down,” I admit. “I try not to trust people, but then I just let this random magician do whatever. I shouldn’t have…”

“Hey.” Cain puts a hand on my arm. I light up all over. “That’s what we’re here for.”

“Are you saying you trust me?” I ask.

Cain shakes his head, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “No. I only trust North and Raven. No one else.”

His eyes are still filled with heat, though.

I swallow. I could ignore that heat. I probably should. I feel like I’m in a dance, playing a game where we’re competing against each other. “You want to sleep with me but not trust me?”

“Oh, and you trust me, do you?” Cain points out, his fingertips brushing against my towel. Like he’s considering ripping it off of me.

Heat crawls up my spine. He’s distracting me, or so the warning voice in the back of my brain says. But I kind of want to be distracted. I want to make this… playful. Because we’re getting into dangerous territory. I don’t want to spill my secrets.

“Maybe I do, maybe I don’t,” I reply. “I’m not the one who’s sold on the whole mate thing. It’s your job to convince me, remember?”

“Oh, it’s my job, is it?” Cain chuckles. He sounds incredibly amused by me.

Normally I’d feel condescended to, but I don’t feel that way with Cain. It feels more like I’m a poisonous snake and he knows it in how he’s handling me, as he’s trying to be careful with me. But I suspect he just meets everything in life with humor.

“Well, I’m not going to just fall swooning into your arms like a heroine in an old movie,” I point out. “You’ve got to work for that.”

“Oh, I don’t think you’re the swooning type of girl at all,” Cain agrees, very seriously. He eyes me up and down and it feels like the heat from him, his demonic nature, is landing on my skin, warming me up in turn. “None of us expect you to buy into this right away, Kiara.” He pauses. “Except maybe Raven. But you’re allowed to have some concerns. That’s why we’ll prove to you that we’re worthy mates.”

“But you just said you don’t trust me.”

“And I don’t.” A bit of an edge enters Cain’s voice.

“But why not?” I ask. I’m teasing him a little, and I really shouldn’t. Not when I’m a hypocrite for not trusting them. “I’m your mate.”

Cain inhales sharply, and then takes a step into me so that I’m pinned against the doorframe, trapped between solid wood and his body. His fingertips trail down my jaw, my throat, then lower. I whimper.

“I don’t have to trust someone to protect them,” Cain points out. He tilts my chin up, and a moment later I feel his tongue lap against my skin, tasting a stray water droplet that slides down my neck. “Or to sleep with them.”

His voice is pure sex, and I squirm helplessly. I’ve never been so powerless to my own lust before. I’ve never wanted anyone as much as I do these three men. It’s intoxicating, but also fucking terrifying. What the hell is happening to me? I’ve never let my distrust of people be overwhelmed by my desire before. But I justwantso badly—

I’m not sure which one of us moves, Cain or me, but the next thing I know, we’re kissing.

He’s so good at it, teasing, drawing me out until I’m moaning with it, desperate. His thigh shoves between mine, and I grind down, grabbing onto his arms, sucking on his tongue. Sparks are flying inside me.

For a second, I’ll be honest, I think I’ve orgasmed. What else could this pure white feeling in my eyes be? But then I realize… it’s not an orgasm. I know what those feel like, the rushing pleasure of them, and this isn’t pleasure. Not really.
