Those quiet words slip into my ear and settle right in my heart, and a sudden swell of emotion rises inside me. I feel lighter than before, happier, and I can’t help but laugh a little as my orgasm fades and the reality of the situation sets in. It’s slightly ridiculous.

Cain draws back and gazes down at me, a bemused smile on his face. “What?”

“Nothing.” I grin. “It’s just, I’m pretty sure this isn’t how I figure most kidnappers handle the post-abduction. Fighting each other and then banging in the kitchen.”

He pretends to think about this for a moment. “Huh. I guess we’re just special that way.”

He smirks at me, and I laugh again. We never exactly ‘finished’ our fight, but it feels like something has been resolved between us anyway, as if something has shifted in a big way.

I like this version of Cain, the one that’s more open and relaxed. I know that it’s because of me, although I don’t mean it in an arrogant way. I didn’t waltz in and ‘change’ him or anything. But I let him in, and that means that he let me in, in return.

“I’m not sorry we did that,” I assure him. “I think that was important. It was needed.”

Cain nods, rubbing his hands up and down my sides in a comforting manner. “I agree.”

I feel closer to him now, and that feeling makes me want to keep touching him, so I run my fingers through his hair.

“I know we’re not at the level that you are with North and Raven,” I murmur. “I get it. They’ve been with you for years, and they’ve put in the time and the work. They’ve proven to you that you can trust them. But I hope that you’ll at least give me the chance to prove to you that I’ll be there for you just as they’ve been. You and I will stick together. I’m not going to betray you, and I just hope that you’ll give me a chance.”

Cain nods again, then kisses my cheek. “I’ve been asking you to rely on me and the other two without doing the same thing in return. I can’t ask you to have faith in us and then not give you some ofmyfaith.”

I kiss him again. What? He’s a very good kisser, and I think good behavior deserves to be rewarded.

“And, hey.” I pull away. “I think that there’s no reason we can’t have our revenge anyway. We need Donovan to get in with Roanac. But after that, we don’t need him anymore.”

I smile, and I can feel the viciousness in it, but I don’t care. Cain’s not going to dismiss my viciousness or think that it’s bad. He’s going to match me in it. He wants to destroy vampires just like I do.

“And when we don’t need him anymore… well.” I shrug and wink at him.

Cain smirks at me. I can see the viciousness that I feel reflected in his eyes. “Yes.”

“And we can go after the vampire your brother sold you to,” I add. “Whatever, whoever, you need to eliminate, Cain, we’ll go after them. Vampires like that deserve to be put down.”

Hell, I think most vampires deserve to be put down for all that they’ve done to us fae.

Cain’s smirk turns into a full on grin. “I like the way you think. But. Luckily for me.” He shrugs. “The vampire slaver is already dead.”

“Oh is he now?” I can easily imagine how that happened, and I can’t help but shiver a little. “Now that’s a story I’d like to hear.”

There’s clearly a kinship between the two of us. We’re both a bit vicious, vengeful, truly violent, one might say, where vampires are concerned. But can you blame us? After my parents were taken from me, after I had to spend my life hiding, and after what happened to Cain, being in actual slavery, it’s no wonder that we’re not friends.

I yank him back in and kiss him, feeling hot all over at the idea of him killing that vampire. Cain’s a force to be reckoned with. All of my mates are. And now I have a mate that’s got the same streak against vampires that I do. Perfect.

I wrap my arms around him as Cain kisses me back with just as much passion and fury, the two mingling just like before until they’re almost the same thing. Only this time instead of the anger being at each other, it’s anger at the vampires. It’s a united front.

“I’m proud of you,” I whisper. “You killed him, didn’t you?”

“You bet I did,” Cain replies. There’s a purr in his voice, and I grin and kiss him again.

Fuck, I could kiss him for a while. But I do eventually pull away. Wejusthad sex, and no matter how much my body demands more, it’s about time I checked in on the other two. I shouldn’t let them do all the work taking care of Donovan while I’m just off having fun with one of my other mates.

I clean myself up and head back into the safe room to see what’s going on.

Donovan is still tied up and stuck in the circle of holy water. Looks like the other two also added a crucifix to his wrists and some salt in a ring as well for good measure. I approve. You can never be too careful when it comes to vampires, in my humble and bitter opinion.

I look over at North and Raven. “Everything okay?”

“We’re good,” North answers, with a knowing smirk at me. “How’s Cain?”
