Woods’ gaze flits between the two of us. “Look, I'm not discounting anything. I'm a man of science. And if the science says she's possessed then she's possessed.“

Salinas opens his mouth to agree, but I hold my hand up. I’m curious about what happened, but really, I care far more about her well-being.

“Well, regardless of what the science says, she's been in an accident, and I think things are going to get worse before they get better. If her mom is right, and she's been dealing with this for a long time, then it stands to reason that she is further along in the process than we thought. That means that every time she does something as mundane as this; like driving her car out of a suburb or making herself a sandwich, then she's in danger. We need to do something about it, and we need to do something about itnow.“

A chilly silence settles between us as we all consider this, and what this means for us. And for her.

“Okay,“ Woods says. “That's what we’re trying to do, Misha. Why we’re here. What do you suggest we do in the interim?“

Salinas sighs as he drops his shoulders. I can tell he means every word before he speaks, and I don’t like to hear it. “I hate to say this, but I think we need to do another exorcism on Trine Lange.“

I need to see her. I need to make sure that she is okay, because talking to doctors might be one thing, and I trust them to tell me the truth, but I need to confirm that she is okay by looking into her eyes and speaking to her.

And now I need to tell her we’re going to do another exorcism.

REI

I’m trying to make sure I calm down before I see her. I know she’s going to want to make sure that we’re okay, and I don’t want to have her worry about us, considering she’s the one who has almost been in a practically deadly accident.

I don’t want her to see how upset I am, but I don’t know how long I can put this off for.

I do have to speak to her.

Whatever happened, there is every chance that she woke up disoriented and upset. There are few things as jarring as waking up in a hospital room and not remembering how you got there, and I watched the paramedics put her in a stretcher, so I know for a fact that she had passed out.

I know she’s conscious now, but it’s always a concern when someone has been unconscious for a bit. It’s always rather worrying.

So I need to check that she’s okay; I need to see it with my own eyes. I’m working on not pacing around. I know the other guys look to me as something like a guide when it comes to medical stuff, so it’s my responsibility to keep myself together. Unfortunately, I’m finding it rather difficult not to fidget, and I have tells. Running my hand through my hair, wiping my glasses, tapping my foot impatiently. They’re not watching me too closely, so I’m not that worried about it. I’m mostly worried about Trine.

She might be physically okay, but this has to be playing havoc with her mind.

Behind the door to Trine’s room, I can hear voices, an animated conversation mostly from her mom’s side. Her mother is in there with her husband, and I guess she was really concerned. This is not what I had in mind when I said they needed to mend their relationship.

When I hear footsteps approaching the door, I make sure to take a few steps away from the door. I don’t want her to think I was spying on them.

“She wants to see you guys,“ Aura says, her eyes rimmed with tears. Her husband has his hand hooked around her bicep, and he looks worried about her, but he flashes us a tenuous smile before the two of them walk away. As they do, Aura cranes her neck to look back. When she speaks, she does so quietly. “Hey, don’t say anything that’ll upset her, okay? She’s going to be okay, but I think this hit her hard.“

I want to ask what that means, but they walk away before I can, and I realize very quickly that I don’t care. I want to go in and check on Trine.

The door is ajar, and I push it wide open, ignoring everything around us as I walk up to her. She looks okay. Not great, but okay. Her skin is paler than usual, her hair is messy and there are bruises and scrapes all over her arms, but she’s conscious.

Her eyes glimmer when I meet her gaze.

I’m vaguely aware of footsteps behind me as Misha and Luke follow me into her hospital room. Her gaze flits around the room until it falls on me again, and she flashes me a small, effortful smile.

“Hey,“ I say.

“Hey,“ she replies, her voice croaky. She’s having a hard time talking. She probably needs something to drink.

“Do you want some water?“ I ask.

She clears her throat. “Yes, but I already asked the nurse for some,“ she says slowly. “How long have you guys been waiting for? I thought you might've left.“

Misha scoffs. He closes the space between them, and he speaks quietly. He sounds very worried. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard him like this. “No. Of course we didn't leave. What would give you that idea? Why would we go anywhere else, when we needed to make sure you were okay?“

He puts his hand on her shoulder and she tilts her head up to meet his gaze, but as soon as he touches her, she grimaces. She’s obviously in pain, and I really don’t like seeing it.

“Can we give her some space, maybe?“ I ask as I watch, my breath caught in my throat. He nods, and Trine looks at me gratefully.
