“Because we don’t have the manpower to possess everyone,“ I tell her. “We need more people in our ranks and as we approach the coming war, we’re trying to recruit more people.“

She glares at me. “You thought this would recruit me?“

I shake my head. “No, they didn’t,“ I say. “Creative people that we possess are more like the media. We don’t necessarily want to recruit you, but it’s not bad if we do. It’s just a bonus. You’re a conduit, not a target.“

“Jesus Christ,“ Aura says. “So we’re just disposable tools?“

“Well, everyone’s a disposable tool, you guys are just the first in line for disposable tools,“ I say. “But if it makes you feel better, you’re also going to be the ones that they use for the longest.“

“For what?“ the priest asks. He doesn’t step away from the door, but I can tell he’s furious. This isn’t great. He’s the only one I’m actually afraid of and I can tell I’m already pissing off. “What are you talking about?“

“Isn’t it obvious, Father?“ I ask, my gaze flitting to him. “Shouldn’t you be the one to know?“

“Enlighten me anyway,“ he says. “Since you seem to know everything.“

“I don’t know everything. I just know this. And you know it too. If you pretend to do that, then you’re either lying to yourself or you’re just lying. I’m pretty sure lying is a sin.“

“Right. And you’re the authority on sin,“ Luke says. “That means we should absolutely believe in what you’re saying, right?“

“I do believe him,“ Trine says softly. “He’s right. Something is happening. I mean, if it wasn’t, you guys wouldn’t be in business, right? And, uh…it’s raining fish, just in case you didn’t notice.“

I think Luke is going to protest, but Aura sighs, dropping her arms. “I hate to say this, but I think he’s right,“ she says. “Something about the environment…it’s everything. It’s not just that the air has felt thicker, but it’s everything. It sort of lines up with the things I’ve studied.“

“Luke?“ Rei asks.

“Humans and celestial entities, or, well, whatever the fuck he is, they don’t experience time the same,“ he says. “There might have been apocalyptic signs, but that doesn’t mean anything. Some biblical scholars say that a thousand years for us is about a year for them.“

“That might be the case, but I have news for you,“ I say. “Things still end, whether it takes a thousand years there and a day over there. A thousand years still comes to an end.“

“So you’re saying that’s now?“

“I’m saying that it’s coming up to the end, yes,“ I reply. “All of you can try to deny it, but you know I’m right.“

“What’s going to happen when it does come to an end?“ Rei asks. Everyone looks at him. “What? I’m not Christian.“

“You should probably study that, considering your profession,“ I say.

“Thank you so much for the career advice,“ he replies. “I’ll make sure to take it into consideration.“

“Can you stop bickering and let him get through this, please?“ Trine asks. I probably shouldn’t be ecstatic at how protective she seems to be toward me, but I can’t help but like it. I know they’re all going to listen to her, so it’s good to have her on my side, but I really wish she didn’t have to protect me in the first place.

“I have gotten through it, to be fair,“ I say. “I said what I needed to say. You’re right to think that this isn’t an isolated incident, and…“

“You could’ve told her that in a number of other ways,“ Rei says. “When you were stalking her…“

“I wasn’t stalking her, I was trying to talk to her,“ I reply. “She wouldn’t have believed me if I had just come out and said it.“

“Okay, so let’s say you’re telling the truth,“ Misha says. “Why should we trust you? Aren’t you one of them?“

“He’s protected me for this long,“ Trine says. “Why would he do that if he wanted to hurt me?“

“You can’t be this naive,“ Aura says. “What if the reason he’s protected you is just to get close to you?“

“That makes no sense,“ I say. “Why would I want to do that? I’m here at great personal risk to myself. I just killed a demon that was on his way here…“

“Okay, that’s another thing I don’t understand,“ Trine says. “Why would someone come here to hurt us if you need us?“

“Not us,them,“ I say. “In case it isn’t clear, your usefulness is essentially over. They can’t afford for you to be aware of what they’re actually doing, so now you’re at the top of their kill list.“
