“So what makes you think we should listen to you?” Misha asks. He towers over Malon, who isn’t a small guy. He seems like he could, in fact, take Misha in a fight. Not many people do.

But there’s three people here. It doesn’t matter how strong he is, he can’t run from all of us.

“I don’t think you should listen to me,” Malon says. “I think you need to listen to what Trine wants, and obviously…”

He trails off when Trine walks into the room, mascara falling down her cheeks as her gaze darts between all four of us. “We need to leave.”

“What?” Misha asks. “I thought the plan was to hole up here.”

“I can explain later,” she replies. “I can’t stay here one moment longer, so I need…we need to leave.”

Luke straightens up. I watch as his fist tightens around the handle of the axe. “What about him?”

Trine’s jaw hardens. “He’s coming with us,” I say. “Before, I don’t know, we decide what to do. I just don’t want him popping up anywhere else.”

“I’m right here,” Malon says.

“Shut up,” Misha growls at him. “You don’t get a say in this.”

Malon mumbles something under his breath.

Trine sighs. “Look, I don’t know what we’re doing yet, but coming here was a bad idea,” she says. “Seeing my mom was a bad idea. We shouldn’t be here. I need to go home. I shouldn’t have…”

She’s clearly agitated. Something happened with her mom, but I don’t know if she wants to talk about it. I walk over to her, my hands on her shoulders. Her hair is wet and straight. She smells terrible; fuck, we probably all smell terrible. But I’m not worried about that.

She looks like she’s on the verge of a breakdown. I wouldn’t blame her at all after everything she’s gone through and I’m clearly missing some information here.

“Are you okay?” I ask.

She narrows her eyes. “We just need to leave.”

Right. Stupid question then.

“Okay,” Misha says, turning to look at Malon. “You, get up.”

Malon does as he says, pushing himself to his feet.

“Don’t do anything stupid,” Misha says.

“Like coming here?” Malon replies, rolling. “Yeah, I wouldn’t dream of it.”

“Can we keep arguing about this in the car?” Trine says. She sounds like she’s on the verge of tears. “I would really like to get out of here.”

“Wait,” Aura says from behind her. “Look, I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings, I just didn’t know how to tell you…”

“Don’t worry, you don’t have to make anything else clear to me,” Trine says, turning to face her. “I think everything is clear to me now.”

“Look, can we just talk about this like civilized people?” Aura asks.

“Oh, during therapy or something?” Trine asks. “Yeah, Mom. That’s gonna go over great. What do you think my therapist is going to say when I tell her you abandoned me to marry a demon?”

“I didn’t abandon you,” Aura says, anger creeping into his voice. “And I resent the implication that I did.”

“I’m not implying anything,” Trine replies. “I’m straight up telling you. You’re a terrible mother.”

Aura’s mouth drops open. Her husband stands next to her, and my gaze flits between him and Malon. Are they actually demons? Could what Luke and Misha have been saying all this time be the truth?

No. That makes no sense. That absolutely defies all known science. I did see Trine levitate, but surely, there’s an explanation for that. I might not have thought about it yet, but there has to be.
