Now, I have an arsenal that will do my bidding with one simple demand. I want to utilise every single aspect of power, and I’ll pay handsomely the man who throws Natalia at my feet.

“I need a drink,” I quickly state, wanting to rinse the stale taste of her name from my mouth. “I’ll be right back.”

I know he wants to argue. Sebastian always was very forthright with anything he had to say, but he’s also a sarcastic bastard. I know he’s about to make a comment that I don’t pour my own drinks anymore. I have men beneath me who do just that. Sebastian will soon learn I am nothing like my father, nor am I even like Nicolas Abernathy.

Things are going to change.

“Your father always said a king needs a queen.”

I stop dead in my tracks as that voice slices the tense air around me. A few seconds tick by, and slowly, a movement in the shadows shifts its way out to the light. A cast of blonde curls catches my sight before anything else.

“You still believe it’s you, Cassie?”

I don’t move. I never move.

Cassie, however, never stops.

It’s become incredibly banal around here, and while my father thinks Cassie is perfect for me, he doesn’t know the reasons I keep her around. In theory, she’s faultless, but in reality, she’s everything I don’t want.

More commitment.

“Why shouldn’t it be me?” she asks, the slightest hint of hurt to her words.

“Because when I said I’d do this without a bride, I meant that in every sense of the word.”

“Beck.” She sighs, coming to stand in front of me, hands pressed against the crisp white of my shirt, pristinely manicured nails prepared for battle. “How long are we going to do this?”

“Do what?”

She laughs. “You playing hard to get.”

“It’s not hard to get when there’s nothing to get.”

Her expression changes in an instant, and her touch goes slack. I know exactly how she’s going to react, and that’s why I tire of Cassie so quickly.

“I don’t know what you want me to say. It’s just sex, Cassie. I don’t know where you ever got the idea it was anything else.” I narrow my gaze, taking in the sight of her as disdain filters through my system. “You’re not the first to warm my bed, and you won’t be the last.”

The slap is loud and resounding, and half-expected.

“The first slap as king came a lot quicker than I thought it would, but nicely done, Cassie,” Sebastian gloats, clapping as he approaches. “What did he do to deserve it?”

“Breathe?” Cassie asks, her eyes shooting daggers at me. “I hope your dick falls off.”

“Goodbye, Cassandra.”

Remaining stoic in the face of someone who wishes I’d roll over and die is actually an easier task than anyone ever gives credit for. It’s made simpler when I know she’ll be back between my sheets before she even remembers why she hates me.

She’s right, though. My father does believe I need a queen by my side.

All of my life, I watched The Company be run by a powerful man, his wife always hidden in the background. Since his death, my father has changed his ideas about how The Company should be run.

Nicolas Abernathy never needed a woman for anything other than children, and even that she failed on.

I’ll do this on even less.

“Can we get out of here?”

“Can the boss just do that?” Sebastian gasped, a hand going dramatically to his chest. “I mean… doesn’t one need an entourage now?”
