Uncle Davey sighs. “I know but she’s my wife, man. I have to share my location with her, so she knows I’m not out doing god knows what with god knows who. If I even stop at a gas station outside of this damn radius, I’m in the doghouse. Aside from all the negativity she emits, I love her. But, unfortunately, the leash is short, and I don’t know how much more of this I can take.”

“At least she doesn’t use the literal leash on you and make you walk around on all fours.” My daddy snickers.

“And the sex is disappointing. Even when it happens, it’s not worth it. But fuck, why couldn’t she have a hell of a pussy? One that I’d love to keep fucking despite all the shit. That’d be a reason to stay.”

I gasp. Uncle Davey said bad words.

“So you’ll put up with her a little more until you can’t.”

“I just wish she would love me the way I love her — unconditional, willing to go the extra mile to put a smile on my face, or just wrapping her arms around me for a warm hug. A phone call or a text when she’s running late, maybe pick up my favorite beer on the way home from work, or just plan a date night for us. Damn, just give me a little something to show you care.”

The garage door closes, and I freeze. Then, I hear heels click across the kitchen and realize my mommy is home. I slide down another step so I can peer around the corner.

“David? Oh my god, it’s been a while! How are you? James didn’t tell me you were stopping by.” My mom reaches to hug Uncle Davey.

“Jessica, good to see you.”

Jessica kisses my daddy on the forehead. “Don’t stay up too late. I’m taking a bath and laying down.” She winks at Daddy and saunters off to their bedroom.

“See, you need to get a woman who says she’s taking a bath when she really means ‘I’ll be waiting for you.’ And that woman is not Kristie,” My daddy says and takes a sip of his beer.

“I’ve never understood how you found her, but you have a good woman. Kristie is nothing compared to Jessica.”

“Hey now! Hands off my woman.” Daddy laughs. “You can have that kind of love too, you know. It’s not about being possessive, bitchy, and high-maintenance. It’s about the mutual respect you have for each other, admiration, and the understanding that the two of you are in this for the long haul. Sadly, Kristie doesn’t have those traits, and unfortunately, she never will.”

I hear my daddy say goodbye a few moments later, and the front door closes. I run up the stairs and jump back into bed before someone catches me.

All at once, and in a matter of seconds, I realize three things. One, Uncle Davey needs to be loved fiercely but gently. Two, Kristie, whoever she is, is not the one for him. Three, there will never be anyone else for me.

Chapter Two

DAVID

I pull into the driveway, dreading going inside. Kristie knew I would be visiting James for the night, but I didn’t expect to be gone for so long.

A light flickers upstairs, and a figure appears in the window.

Uh oh. This is not good.

I turn off the car and walk up to the front door. I turn the lock, walk into the kitchen, and set my keys on the table. Opening the fridge, I grab a water bottle and head upstairs to face my punishment.

She is waiting for me when I open our bedroom door, and she doesn’t look happy.

“You’re lucky I checked your location, and you were still at James’.”

“Kristie, it’s been a long night. Can we please not do this?” I pull my shirt over my head and take off my pants.

“No, you’re late.”

I sigh and head to the bathroom. Kristie steps in front of me. “Excuse me.”

She doesn’t move; she just keeps holding her stance.

“What are you doing? I need to piss.”

Her eyes darken, and she doesn’t blink.

“Come on, Kristie. I need to piss. We can deal with this tomorrow; it’s late.”
