I fall onto my back beside her, and she turns her head to look at me. I’m out of breath, but I have never felt more alive as I stand up to grab the towel hanging off the back of her chair. I clean her up and throw the towel in the direction of her laundry basket.

Skylar squeals as the towel lands at her feet at the end of the bed, instead of the laundry basket, and closes her eyes, then starts to hum a song. I let the buzz of my orgasm and everything that is Skylar lull me into a deep sleep.

Chapter Nineteen

SKY

The slam of the garage door closing startles me awake. A voice rings out, calling me.

“Sky? Honey, we’re back!”

Oh shit.

I nudge David. “Wake up. You’ve gotta get out of here.”

He groans and turns over.

“David! Now. They’re coming!” I give him another shove.

David’s eyes fly open. “Oh fuck!” He jumps up, scrambling to put his pants on, and grabs his belt and shirt on the way to the door. He puts his finger against his lips and opens the door. The coast is clear, so he nods. He’s barely out of the door when I hear it.

“What the fuck? Sky. Skylar!” My dad’s voice echoes down the hall. “Get out here, now.”

I jump out of bed and pull on my nightshirt and a pair of shorts. I run my fingers through my hair, trying not to freak out. Taking a deep breath, I open my bedroom door the rest of the way and step out into the hallway. What I see when I turn stops me dead in my tracks.

My dad has Uncle Davey pinned against the wall outside of the bathroom. Uncle Davey is still shirtless, and his belt is still unbuckled, hanging off his pants.

“James? What’s wrong?” My mom comes running up the stairs and stops at the top. She looks from them to me, back to them, and then back to me. “Oh.”

“It’s not what it looks like.” Uncle Davey starts to talk, and my dad pushes into his chest a little more with a threatening look.

He holds up his hand and waves two fingers at me. I take a few steps forward where he can get a better look at me. I knew better than to test him.

“Dad, I…I can explain.” I glance down at the floor. The look on my dad’s face is breaking my heart.

“This fucker better not have hurt you,” he says to me as he turns his head toward my mom, and she rushes in my direction.

I brush her off. “I’m fine.”

‘The hell you are!” My dad lets go of Uncle Davey, only to spin around and punch him square in the jaw. “What the fuck have you done?”

“Dad! Stop!” My heart breaks, and I sob.

He delivers another blow to Uncle Davey’s midsection. Uncle Davey grunts as he falls to the ground. “You are nothing. Nothing!”

“David!” I try to run toward him, but my mom grabs my arm and stops me. I try to pull my arm away from her, but she holds on tight.

“Hold on,” Uncle Davey tries again. “James, wait.”

James punches him again and spits at him. “I swear to god if you hurt my little girl, I’ll kill you. Get the fuck out of here!”

“I’m sorry, Bug.” He tries to get up and stumbles his way down the stairs.

“Don’t you ever talk to her again.” My dad’s voice trails after him. “Don’t even look at her. Don’t come back here. I’ll kill you, you bastard! I’ll kill you!”

The front door slams a few seconds later. My dad turns to me and just shakes his head. He starts to head down the stairs, changes his mind, and comes charging back at me.

“What did he do to you? Did he hurt you?” He lifts my arm, inspecting it. My mom lets go, and he lifts the other arm. He spins me around and tries to lift my shirt.
