“Harder,” I moan against his mouth.

I clench around him, screaming his name when I come. He grunts, grinding his pelvis into me, and follows me over the edge.

When he releases me, I melt to the floor of the shower. Warm water sprays across my back while I try to catch my breath. King leans his head against the stall wall, doing the same. After a few minutes, I manage to stand again. King hasn’t moved, so I take my time pouring body wash onto the luffa and begin scrubbing the dried blood from his body. His eyes open, watching me warily. I smile and scrub until every inch of him is covered in suds. When I tug his hand, he steps into the spray of water, letting it wash away the last remnants of whatever occurred while he was away.

I lather my own skin, running gentle fingers across the sensitive flesh between my thighs before rinsing that away too. Once we are both clean, King shuts off the water and steps out, offering me a towel. It’s such a mundane gesture, like we have done this a thousand times before. My chest tightens and tears clog my throat. I swallow, forcing the emotion down.

It’s not until we step out of the bathroom and are fully clothed again that I ask him what happened. I don’t expect details and don’t get them. But I understand enough to know that Lucian won’t be a problem anymore and that he wasn’t working alone. The latter turns my blood to ice.

“I don’t understand. He didn’t know who paid him?”

“He claims to not know, but Lucian was a liar. I’d bet my life he knew exactly who held his reins.”

“But why tell you at all? He could have let you believe you won.”

“I don’t pretend to understand the working of his mind, Nolan. But I fully believe someone else is involved. It makes it all the more imperative that you girls stay here and we find your father.”

“Oh, I talked to him. Just before you came back, actually. He said he didn’t answer because he was playing golf.”

“Good. So, he’s safe and Jeffrey found him? Filled him in on what has occurred?”

I think back over the conversation while worrying my lip between my teeth. “He didn’t seem upset or worried.”

“What do you mean? I know your father. If he thought for a second you were in danger, he would lose his shit.”

“I don’t know, King, maybe Jeffrey hasn’t made it to him yet. He didn’t mention him to me.”

I see the gears ticking away in his mind. “What is it? What are you keeping from me?”

“I spoke to Jeffrey on the way back in, and he said he was with your father and had him filled in. He said he was safe, and his phone was dead, but that he would have him call you as soon as it charged.”

“That doesn’t make sense. He would have mentioned something to me. He even asked me why I was freaked out and worried.”

“Let’s check on the others, and then I’ll call William myself. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about yet.”

I let him lead me from the room. I’ve worn enough masks in my lifetime to know when someone else is sporting one. Something is bothering King, and he doesn’t want me to worry right now. It’s a kind gesture but does little to stop my mind from racing. He’s hiding something from me. Something he thinks will hurt me. And I intend to find out exactly what it is, one way or another. After all, he might be the King of the City, but I am the Queen of Games.
