Flicking the latch on either side, I open it up, and it’s another shit-load of cash. But this time, there is a note on top in an envelope.

Yanking it open, I start to read:

Katarina,

I know you told me you didn’t want any more money from me other than your father’s debt, but I insist on you taking this.

You deserve to be happy, and you deserve a fresh start. This will help. Please don’t be stubborn about this. Let me do this one thing for you. After how I acted, I hope you think of it as an apology.

Please use it to get as far away from bad men like your father and myself as you can. I wish you nothing but happiness.

-Dominic

P.S. John has been instructed not to leave until you accept the money, so don’t be stubborn.

That stupid son-of-a-bitch just can’t admit that he and I are good together. I guess I’m just going to have to get it through that thick skull of his.

When I get done reading, I look at John, who looks like the cat who ate the canary.

“You are supposed to stay with me until I say I’ll take this money?”

He nods. “Those were my orders.”

“Fine. Then, you are taking me and that money back to Vegas.”

Chapter Twenty-Two

DOMINIC

I head toward my security room to check and see how things are running on the casino floor. I’m back to my daily routine, but since Katarina left, it’s become more monotonous than routine. It doesn’t give quite the same satisfaction that it once did.

Thinking about her, I pull out my phone for the tenth time in an hour to see if I had any text or call from John. He should have arrived in Atlantic City hours ago, but I haven’t heard a word.

Maybe he’s having a hard time finding her. Or maybe, more than likely, Katarina is being stubborn and doesn’t want to take the money. I insisted he not leave until she agrees to keep it, though.

I shove my phone back in my pocket as one of my other security guys gets my attention, “Hey boss, I think you might want to take a look at this.”

When I sit in front of the monitor, my jaw about drops when I see Katarina seated at the Blackjack table. She already has a stack of chips sitting in front of her, and I wonder what the fuck she’s doing.

Damnit, Katarina.

“Isn’t that…” he begins, but the look I give him shuts him right up.

“Pick her up and bring her upstairs to my place. Hurry up. I want her off the floor.”

A few minutes later, I’m walking into my penthouse, where Katarina is already sitting on the couch, waiting for me. I nod at my guy, letting him know it’s time to get the fuck out.

I take a seat on the loveseat across from the couch when we are alone. “Alright, Katarina, you’ve got my attention.”

She grabs the briefcase off the floor and tosses it to me. “Do you want to tell me what this was about?”

“The note said it all. I was trying to help.”

“What makes you think I need your help?” She asks.

“You took it the first time.”

She holds up her finger. “Wrong. You and I made a deal the first time--a tit for tat, if you will. This time, you were just handing me cash.”
