The door opens, and the evil man, the one that grabbed Miri yesterday, walks into the room. His eyes immediately find her, so I take her hand in mine, lending her my strength.

“Evening, girls.” The trainer’s voice marks her entrance. We’ve been left so far today. Usually, there’s some form of degrading act to learn or practice. “Tonight, you will be tested. You will show me what good girls you are – that you have paid attention. Call it a trial. You’ll be escorted to the other room, choose your clothing and when instructed, join us and our guests upstairs.” She smiles at this. But worse, so does the man in the room – the evil one. His name is Elias, and I know that he has eyes for my sister.

The trainer points to the two girls we first travelled with, and they obediently walk up to her and follow one of the men out. Next, she looks at Elias and nods. He marches straight towards us, so I stand, blocking his path. He bumps right up to me, towering over me, but I don’t move.

“You can take me,” I say, not knowing if he’ll understand or not.

“Get out of my way, bitch.”

My heart pounds, and my pulse races, but I don’t move. “No. Take me.”

“Bring her to me,” the trainer screams.

He grabs my arm, yanking me harshly towards her. I pray that Miri stays quiet, and although it kills me to do it, I keep my eyes focused on the woman and Elias.

“Did you not hear me yesterday? Did I not make myself clear?” She brushes my hair from my face, sending a shiver through my body. My eye is puffy this morning, but I’ve not looked at what I imagine is a darkening red graze across my cheek.

“I will do whatever you ask. But it will be me. Not her.” My words are clear and only hold a tiny tremor I pray he doesn’t hear. She understands me because she spoke Danish to me.

She glances at Elias, who hasn’t lessened his grip on my arm. “It’s only a matter of time, girl,” he sneers into my ear.

I wait.

My eyes lock on the woman who seems to hold all the control.

“Very well. Elias, maybe you can help with her outfit for this evening?” Her eyebrow lifts in suggestion.

As he pulls me towards the door, I look over my shoulder at Miri. Her eyes shine with tears, and her hand is over her mouth, forcing herself to be quiet. My smile of reassurance is weak, but at least she might be safe for today.

Elias watches as the other girls leave the room and then shoves me hard into one of the chairs. I take the hint and sit as he stalks over to the clothes rail. He doesn’t utter a word, but every motion, every movement is filled with aggression. The sharp squeak of metal on metal as he pushes the hangers back and forth makes my teeth buzz.

“Change.” He throws something at me, and I pick it up. It’s not even an outfit, more like a number of straps of leather kept together with silver rings.

I move towards the washroom at the back, but he stops me. “Here.”

He’s baiting me – challenging me to break. Maybe it’s part of his sick game, but I won’t break. I won’t break.

My teeth clench together as I put the costume on the chair and start to take off my shirt and jeans. When I’m just in my underwear, I sit back on the chair and work out how to get into this outfit. It’s just straps and buckles and only consists of three small triangles of fabric. I step in and slide them up my legs, over my knickers and position everything as modestly as I can. His slimy gaze rakes over my skin, as I move and twist into the outfit, and it turns my stomach as my fingers fumble the buckles around my chest.

“Here.” He closes the distance between us and turns me around before he tightens the strap at the base of my neck. “Now, let's see it properly.” He pulls out a knife from his pocket and flips the shiny blade free. The coolness of the edge is daunting on my skin and spikes the fear in my blood. Then he pulls and cuts the straps on my bra and then repeats at my hips to shred my knickers.

He tugs at the material awkwardly until I’m as he wants me. My skin pebbles in the cold air, and I cross my arms over my chest to preserve some sort of modesty.

Elias looks me over before pushing my hair from my neck. “You’re my whore, tonight. Remember that. And know that whatever I do to you, I’ll enjoy doing to your sister even more.”

My hands shake, and the prick of tears stings my eyes as realisation sets in. I won’t be able to keep Miri away from him.

“I might even play a game. See just how far you’re prepared to go to protect your sister.” He wags his eyebrows at me before grabbing my hand and leading me out of the room, through the gloom and upstairs.

We emerge into the club, the same area we were in last night, and I look around to see it filled with men. Men in suits, in shirts, drinking and smoking. There are a few girls I don’t recognise dancing on a platform to one side of the room.

Elias heads to the bar and tugs me to follow. I’m barefoot, so I don’t have to worry about heels, but my embarrassment haunts me every step. That’s when I see him – the one with kind eyes that always seems to watch me. I can’t make up my mind if that’s in my favour or not.

Unlike Elias, his eyes don’t send revulsion through me. Instead, they heat my skin in a way I don’t want to think about.

As I’m positioned next to him, my body wants nothing more than to drop my head and hide my face, but I force my eyes to remain vigilant. In my mind, I’m wearing a pretty dress – a sexy dress – not something that makes me feel like a possession. But isn’t that what we’re being trained for? To be a pet.

A prize.
