“Why does this feel weird today?” he asks with vulnerability laced in his voice.

“Because we’re becoming more than two strangers across a coffee shop from one another,” I answer honestly.

His eyes pierce mine. “Does that scare you?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want me to leave?”

Taking in a stuttered breath, I answer, “No.” Looking up, I meet his eyes and see that we are both unsure of what to do next.

“Can we do this somewhere other than here?” James asks, still staring at me—through me.

“I, uh, I’m staying at a hotel this weekend.” I warily bite into my lip again.

He reaches across the table for my hand, and the same zap and zing from before is there once again, shooting through me. “I’d love to draw you. Would you let me do that?” He pauses, his eyes never straying from mine. “It doesn’t have to be anything more. I promise.”

Even with my heart ready to beat out of my chest, I can see the sincerity in his words. He would keep it as nothing more than an artist’s session if that’s what I wanted.

But is it? Is that all I want from this?

“I’ve seen that movie though. That’s what Jack said to Rose and look where that led.” I tease, trying to lighten the mood with a grin. He barks out a laugh, sitting back.

I miss his touch, his hand in mine. I grin at him as I take a sip of my coffee to cover up my feelings. Placing my cup back on the saucer, I watch the chocolate slide down the side of the mug. “Okay.”

“Okay?”

Peeking up at him through my lashes, I speak the truth. “I want you to draw me.” My neck and cheeks instantly flush from my admittance.

It’s his turn to cover his smile behind his cup. “I can’t wait.”

We finish our coffees in almost total silence as the shift in our friendship—if you call it that—takes place.

“I’ll see you Saturday,” James whispers into my ear as he places a chaste kiss on my cheek and a note with the details for our meeting in my hand before leaving. My body shudders from it. Closing my eyes, I let it take over me, giving into the want I have for him.

I release a deep breath when I hear the door close, signaling his departure. Opening my eyes, I smile, touching my fingers to my cheek where his lips just were.

I’ve missed this feeling…

Chapter Seven

NOLAN

She’s different. She’s lighter. Happier.

I feel the same knowing that I finally woke up and am able to start giving my wife what she’s needed. How could I have been so blind to her?

Walking to where she’s bent over her suitcase, packing for her weekend away, I press my front to her back, running my hands down her arms. Her head tilts to the side, exposing her long, delicate neck. My lips find their home in the crook of her silky skin.

“You have everything you need?” I ask between kisses on her skin.

“Hmmm,” she hums as goosebumps ghost over her from my touch.

She zips up her bag and turns in my arms, hers going around my neck. Fuck, I’ve missed holding her like this. Tucking a piece of hair behind her ear, I smile down at her.

Smiling back at me, her hands slide up and down my chest. “I’ll see you soon,” she says with a glint in her eye I haven’t seen in a long time.

Bending, I take her lips with mine, both of us groaning, having missed the need and want from one another. Our lips kiss and bruise each other. My tongue seeks out hers, and when they meet, a jolt of electricity shoots through me and straight to my dick.
