“Raphael, it’s good to see you.”

We stared at each other, not saying anything more. I didn’t care why she was stopping by. I didn’t want to see her or have anything to do with her.

Anise chose that moment to make her presence known. Ruthgina turned on her sickening act and walked over to me. Before I could open my mouth to tell the disgusting woman that she needed to go away, she spoke.

“Honey, who is this?” Ruthgina asked.

“Don’t start that shit, Ruth.”

“Whatever are you talking about?”

“Raph, who is this?” Anise asked.

“I’m his fiancé. Didn’t he tell you?”

“No, he didn’t,” Anise said. “It doesn’t matter because I was just leaving.”

Anise turned on her heels and headed back the way she came.

“Ruth, get your nasty claws out of here. You know very well that you’re not my fiancé.”

“Mmm… maybe.”

“Out!” I raised my voice and, for the first time, I saw actual fear.

“I’ll come back later so that we can talk.”

“No, don’t worry about trying to talk to me at all. There is no us. Good day, Ruth.”

I pushed her out the door and headed to find Anise. She was sitting on the bed, twirling her thumbs, until I walked into the room.

“Can you book my flight, please?” Anise looked down at her hands and not at me.

“I can explain all of that. Trust me, Ruth is not my fiancé.”

“It’s not my concern. I just really want to go home.”

I walked toward her, ready to risk more than I ever have for any one woman.

“Anise, just talk to me,” I pleaded.

“No! Don’t touch me or come any closer. If you won’t do it, I’ll find my own way home.”

Fuck if that wasn’t a slap in the face. “Ok. I’ll do it. Will you at least tell me why?”

“It’s time, and that’s all you need to know.”

I didn’t push. I didn’t beg. She was determined to deny anything at the moment. I didn’t think reasoning was going to get me very far. So, I did the one thing I never thought I could ever do. I let her go.
