“Good morning, my beautiful bride,” I answered.

“I can’t believe I’m here in your home in your bed as your wife,” she breathed, her voice wavering.

“This is only the beginning, my love.”

I grasped her chin gently, pulling her into a soft kiss. Her cheeks were still flushed from last night. I couldn’t stop myself from drifting my thumb across her cheek, feeling the warmth with the pad of my finger.

So beautiful. So very mine.

“Today, I’m taking you somewhere special.” I stated.

“Where?” she asked curiously.

“It’s time for our honeymoon, my sweet wife.”

That afternoon, I led Naomi onto a small chartered plane that flew out across the Pacific to a small set of islands specially set aside for the purpose of couples celebrating their marriage. There were several different locations to choose from, but I had thought that Naomi might like the beach the most, especially after seeing the way she’d looked out at the ocean near my home.

The blissful smile that painted her face when we arrived was worth every single penny. We had an entire cabana to ourselves with an absolutely breathtaking view of the waves rolling onto the beach.

I didn’t let her wear clothes for very long.

We spent seven blissful days there. I took her in every single room of that cabana, on the beach, and even in the ocean. By the time we flew out of there, her little pussy was overly sensitive to even the slightest touch. I made her come for me on the plane anyway. Her pained cries of pleasure were music to my ears.

Over the next several weeks, we settled into our new lives. I resumed my job as acquisitions director. After a lucrative offer from the president’s office, she began work as the acquisitions coordinator, with a specialization in collecting information from materials from the old world. Her new position held more power than her old one had, with the added bonus of being able to catalogue every source to the fullest. There was no need to hide anything here.

The absolute joy on her face when she first walked into our collection room was a treat that I would savor for the rest of my life.

She excelled at her new job, just like I’d known she would. I was so proud of her, and I made sure to tell her that every morning when I woke her up with a mug of freshly brewed coffee and a kiss.

A few weeks after that, I was called away on another expedition. There was circumstantial evidence that hinted that another fusion reactor might still be intact somewhere in the southeast and I had the knowledge and expertise to find it.

I was supposed to be gone for about two weeks, but when my comm rang and Naomi’s name flashed across the screen, my trip was cut a little short.

CHAPTER17

Naomi

When Corinne knocked on my office door, I was more than a little startled. I hadn’t expected to see a familiar face from my old life ever again, yet here she was, as real as the vase of brilliant blooming red roses sitting on my desk. I opened and closed my mouth in surprise, finally remembering myself.

“Dr. Moore, it’s so nice to see you,” I greeted her.

Her gaze dropped to the book in my hands. It was another wedding album. Panic jolted me for the briefest moment, but then I reminded myself that I wasn’t in New Englandia and that studying weddings and all other old-world remains was a normal thing here. That it was safe to do so.

“Dr. Vaughn,” she replied politely, but I could see that she was slightly uncomfortable at what she saw. I closed it, pushing it aside for now. She glanced down at my hand, seeing my wedding ring. I wasn’t going to take that off, though, not for anything.

“What brings you all the way here?” I asked. It was very unusual for any of us to travel outside of our home city state, so this probably wasn’t just a visit because she’d missed me at work.

“May I take a seat?” she asked. Her voice trembled just slightly, revealing that she was nervous about something.

I gestured to the armchair in front of my desk.

“Certainly,” I smiled. She sat down and settled her hands in her lap, looking at the floor for a long moment before finally finding the courage to lift her gaze to me. I could tell that she was uneasy by the twitching of her foot against the floor.

“There was talk after you left, about the security team the council sent with you. About what they were really sent to do,” she began. Her eyes were wide, like a deer frozen in a pair of headlights.

“They tried to kill me,” I said simply. Her face fell just a little bit. After a moment, it smoothed over.
