Sam hadn’t been able to avoid hearing about his brother, but he’d never had a reason to do anything with the information.

Jake and Mr. Hammersmith approached the counter, talking about a home repair book that Jake was holding. Sam stepped away to let him use the register. The two men were chatting about how best to fix a leaky faucet.

Unlike Sam, Jake had an easy way with people. Maybe because he was an actor, but more likely because he was a good guy. Since he’d moved back to Bliss Cove, he’d become increasingly less a “movie star” and more just a regular guy who occasionally used his fame for charities and fundraisers.

But mostly, when he wasn’t working on his screenplay or his production company, Jake could be found spending time with his wife Callie, having a drink at the Mousehole, or getting involved in the Mariposa Street renovations.

He’d funded the restoration of the Vitaphone movie theater and was helping the Mortimers start a new film series. He guest-lectured at college and high-school film classes, paid regular visits to the Children’s Hospital as his iconic character Blaze Ripley, and he was always available when Sam called him for help at Title Wave.

“Have a great day, Mr. Hammersmith.” Jake put the receipt in a bag with the book. “Let me know how that sink repair turns out.”

“Will do. Thanks, son.” The older man took the bag and shuffled out of the store.

“You want me to take care of those returns?” Jake turned to Sam, pointing his thumb at the storeroom.

“Yeah, sure. Thanks.” Sam set down his pen and straightened. “Also—”

Jake lifted his eyebrows in question.

“If you want to get in touch with Lincoln Atwood,” Sam said, “I might be able to help you out.”
