After measuring a few more distances, he stretched more wire from the posts to the chair backs. He brought the broken ladder over and set it up alongside the sofa, attaching the last wire to one of the rungs.

“Oh my god, you’re brilliant.” With a clap of her hands, Brooke hurried to drape blankets over the square of wire supports he’d created around the mattress. He tossed sheets over the top while Brooke ducked inside and organized all the pillows.

By the time they were finished, a ten-foot-square fort made up of colorful blanket walls and a ceiling concealed the mattress.

“Come in!” Brooke’s hand appeared behind one of the blankets and waved. “It’s perfect! The only thing missing are the fairy lights.”

Sam pushed aside one of the blankets and clambered onto the mattress. Brooke had arranged all the pillows in a circular nest, and the firelight shone against the blanket walls, casting everything in a reddish sheen. It was cozy, cute, and…extremely close.

He folded his legs, and his knees bumped against hers. The smell of her fruity soap and shampoo filled his head.

“Hold on, I’ll get the supplies.” She crawled out of the fort, giving him a tempting display of her ass clad in soft purple pants.

He pulled in a heavy breath. Ten minutes. Fifteen, tops. Then he’d get out of here and focus on his damned book. Even if it killed him.

Which seemed likely.
