She crossed her arms, narrowing her eyes skeptically. “So on the rare occasions when you’re enjoying kissing as an act in and of itself rather than a means to an end, what are you feeling?”

Sam mumbled a curse and rested his head in his hands. “I don’t dissect my feelings when I’m kissing a woman. I’m too busykissing her.”

“But you have to feel something besides…um, aroused.”

He lifted his head. She was watching him, her eyes darker than usual. The firelight shone behind her, casting her in a golden glow. His heart thumped.

“I mean.” Brooke tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. “There’s physical arousal, of course, but there’s also….emotional and intellectual arousal. Things that go on in your mind.”

He pushed to his feet and deliberately approached her. She parted her lips to draw in a breath. He stopped in front of her, aware that he was crossing into dangerous territory but not caring all that much.

“If you tell me you’re thinking about clouds and hot lava when a guy is kissing you,” he said slowly, “then he’s doing it all wrong.”

“My point is…” Her attention drifted to his mouth. “There has to beromance.”

“Actually, there can just be kissing.”

“All right, then.” She lifted her chin and nodded toward his laptop. “If you don’t want to involve their feelings, then you at least need to describe the kiss itself. A woman just doesn’t fall in love with a man who smashes his lips against hers. John has to have a certaintechniquethat resonates with Patricia. Like a bird responding to a mating call.”

She looked so serious that Sam smothered his instinctive laugh.

Brooke wasn’t fooled. Shetskedin exasperation. “A man needs to knowhowto kiss, Sam.”

“You think I don’t know that?”He watched the delicate muscles of her throat work with a swallow.

“Well, if one were to gauge your knowledge by reading your books, then no.” She raised her dark eyebrows. “In fact, one would deduce that your kissing technique is sorely lacking.”

“One would be wrong.”

“An amazing kiss from a man who knows what he’s doing is hard to find.”

“I know how to kiss.” He curled his fingers against his palms. “I could kiss you right now.”

Two spots of color rose to her cheeks. “And I could be unimpressed right now.”

“Challenge accepted.”

He lifted his hand before he even realized what he was about to do—what he’d been wanting to do for longer than he cared to admit. In one movement, he slipped his hand around her nape and touched her mouth with his.

Though he was careful to keep the contact gentle, almost nonexistent, pleasure exploded through him like a firestorm. Her lips tasted exactly the way he’d imagined, like light, sweet things—cotton candy, meringue, whipped cream.

She inhaled in quick surprise, the back of her neck tensing. He started to pull away. She curled her hand into the front of his T-shirt and tugged him closer.

Goddamn.

Bracing one hand on the loft support behind her, he increased the pressure of his mouth. Yeah, he’d missed sex, but not until this instant did he realize he’d also missedkissing.

Not just any kissing either. Kissing a woman like Brooke, who responded as if the entire world had slipped away. She threaded her fingers through his hair, parted her lips under his, and answered every press of his lips with warm eagerness.

His heart hammered. She shifted, and low murmur slipped from her throat. Her breasts brushed against his chest. Lust jolted through him. He was already getting hard, and they hadn’t been kissing for more than thirty seconds.

Cupping the back of her head, he eased his tongue into her mouth. He wanted to slide his hand under her shirt to her naked breasts, to feel her body arching against his and—

He broke away, his breath rasping through his lungs. Brooke brought a hand to her lips, her skin flushed and eyes wide.

“Um…” She gave a quick shake of her head. “That was…I mean, okay, so you know how to kiss.”

“So do you.” He couldn’t stop staring at her mouth, now reddened from the pressure of his.
