“We don’t have any protection,” she whispered.

He rolled her off him and pressed her into the mattress, his gaze hot but steady on hers. “I’ll keep you safe.”

Pleasure billowed up like steam. He trailed his fingers over her body and found the soft place between her thighs. Brooke gasped. His touch was so precise and perfect that she responded like a feather curving into the wind. He murmured sexy words of encouragement against her lips. A sweet, hot ache expanded outward from her core. As the wave washed over her, he swallowed her cry with his mouth, open and hot.

He eased the final sensations from her body and rolled onto his back. His chest heaved. She shifted against him, giving his pants an impatient tug. After he’d pulled them off, she drank in the sight of his nakedness with both awe and excited delight.

Trembles coursed through her as she wrapped her hand around his shaft and urged him to the blissful completion that he’d given her. His groans of pleasure seemed to match her racing heartbeat. The sensation of him pulsing and shuddering at her touch elicited a fresh wave of arousal.

When he fell back against the pillows with a deep exhalation, she curled up beside him. Firelight flickered through the blanket walls. Their breath mingled in a heavy rhythm.

“Well.” She rubbed her cheek against his shoulder. “That was fun.”

He gave a hoarse laugh and patted her ass. “Indeed.”

Easing away from her, he hauled himself out of the fort and returned with a warm, damp towel that he used to clean them both up. Tossing the towel aside, he settled back beside her and pulled her close.

For all her conviction about starting the new year in thoughtful solitude, Brooke would never have felt likethisif she were alone. She’d have been peaceful and calm, yes, and maybe a bit lonely. She’d never have felt all warm, electric, and jittery. She wouldn’t have this soul-deep satisfaction or an undercurrent of excitement running through her veins, as if she were poised on the brink of something unexpected and thrilling.

The microwave suddenly beeped.

“Oh!” She lifted her head. “It’s almost midnight. I set the timer earlier so I wouldn’t forget the champagne.”

“You want me to get it?” He twisted a lock of her hair between his fingers, studying the reddish-brown strands.

“No, it’s okay.” She folded her arms on his chest and rested her chin on them. “I don’t like champagne all that much, actually. I just brought it because I felt like I should ring in the new year with a tradition.”

He released her hair, his expression sobering. “I hope this year gives you everything you want.”

For some reason, his tone caused a rustle of unease. Shaking it off, she smiled and patted his chest. “Thank you. I hope the same for you, too.”

She meant it, even if she didn’t know what he wanted beyond finishing his book revisions. Funny how she still didn’t know much about him, but she trusted him on what felt like a cellular level. Deep and certain. She’d never felt this way about a man.

“If you don’t want the champagne, we can still celebrate with another new year’s tradition.” He cupped her nape and drew her closer.

“What’s that?”

“The midnight kiss.”

As their lips met, the world shifted from one minute into the next.

Just like that, a new year began.
