“Thanks for feeding her.” Brooke returned to the kitchen, eyeing the coffee and muffins. “And me.”

“Anytime.” He had the strange feeling he meant that word in ways he couldn’t articulate.

“So, are you ready for Romance 101?” After sitting down, Brooke took the lid off her cup and blew on the coffee to cool it.

“I’m not only ready.” He pulled out the chair across from her. “I intend to get an A.”

Amusement curved her lips. “That kiss got you off to a pretty good start. So did last night, for that matter.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.” He rotated the plate toward her. “I got you a blueberry.”

“How did you know blueberry muffins are my favorite?” She plucked the muffin off the plate and began unpeeling the wrapper.

“You had about four boxes of them at the cabin.” He bit into a banana-nut muffin. “Easy guess.”

“Paying attention.” She lifted her eyebrows. “That’s one of the key qualities of a swoon-worthy romantic hero.”

Though Sam took the remark as the compliment it was, he couldn’t prevent a surge of unease. He’d never intended or wanted to be any woman’s “romantic hero,” and even if he had, he didn’t fit the mold of Brooke’s perfect guy.

When it did come time for her to get married—and having been surrounded by such shining family examples, there was no doubt in his mind that day would come, even if the idea scorched him with jealous anger—she’d settle for no less than what she’d read about in all her novels. Especially after that bastard Michael had burned her…Brooke would take no chances and offer no compromises.

As well she shouldn’t. A woman like her deserved everything she wanted.

And a man like him…well, he’d just have to enjoy every second he spent with her, like soaking up the sun before nightfall.

“So what’s the plan?” he asked.

“Leave that to me.” Brooke shot him a smile that turned on a light in his heart. “You’re on my turf now.”

Sam couldn’t think of any place he’d rather be.
