“I work for the school paper,” Katie added. “So I was able to look into it, and yeah, Mr. Spruce has stayed in some expensive digs when he goes on these things. He also bought a new BMW last year.”

Grace didn’t know what to say. These kids were implying that Spruce was using his “reallocated” budget money for personal reasons, which amounted to an accusation of fraud or embezzlement, if not both.

“We wanted to tell you because, like Todd said, it was all kind of weird.” Katie stood and hitched her backpack over her shoulder. “But more because it’s shitty that you’re being accused of something you didn’t do.”

“It’s probably nothing, right?” Todd grabbed his backpack and pushed his arms through the straps. “I just wanted to tell you and say I was sorry.”

“Thank you, Todd. You too, Katie. Please don’t forget our appointment tomorrow morning to discuss your grade situation.”

The girl ducked her head and nodded. After they’d gone, Grace closed and locked the door. She strode to her desk and took her phone out of her book bag. She pulled up a number and called.

“Hello?”

“Brooke, it’s Grace Berry. Do you have time to talk this evening?”

“Of course, but…if this is what I think it’s about, are you sure? I’m not supposed to know what I know. I don’t want you to get in any more trouble.”

Grace straightened her shoulders. “Brooke, I would be thrilled to get into trouble for the right reasons. What time can we meet?”
