Lincoln hated that he hadn’t been there for opening night. He hated that he didn’t know when—or evenif—he’d see Grace again. He hated everything about being away from her.

“I don’t want to take the seat on the board,” Sam said.

“I figured.”

“I have an idea for you, though.” His brother leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “Brooke often talks about Jillian Hanover, the editor atClarity. She was telling me that Jillian has a diverse slate of writers and editors, and that she’s gaining a reputation for being a game changer in the magazine industry. Sounds like she’d be a perfect fit for reworking Folio’s genre fiction imprints in that birds and forest way you were yammering about.”

Lincoln stared at him. Sam sat back and scratched his jaw uncomfortably.

“Man.” Lincoln shook his head with a low laugh. “No one pisses me off more than you do.”

“I guess that means you don’t like the idea.”

“Are you kidding?” Lincoln shoved away from the desk and stood. “It’s fucking brilliant. I’m just mad I didn’t think of it.”

A slow grin broke out across his brother’s face. “Guess I’m better than you after all, huh?”

“Let’s not go that far.” Lincoln shrugged into his suit jacket. “I’ll text her and see if we can go over to her office now to talk about it. Then we can grab some dinner.”

“You’re paying.”

“Damn right I am.”

As they started out the door, Lincoln’s gaze landed on the framed photo. All at once, he remembered that day when they’d gone on the merry-go-round, admired the animals, and shared funnel cake. They’d just had fun.

“I never went to the boardwalk in Bliss Cove,” he said as they walked toward the elevator. “The one with the carnival rides.”

“Great place. Brooke likes the flavored cotton candy.”

Lincoln punched the elevator button. “Maybe…uh, we could go…you know. Sometime.”

“Yeah,” his brother said. “Maybe we could.”
