Even if there had been no one nearby, though, she didn’t think she’d be worried around him. Not just because of the pie, either. He radiated both confidence and safety.

Her nose twitched.

Oranges. Almonds. Warm, smoky spices, like cloves and cinnamon. Handsome Devil also smelledfantastic.

She took out her keys and opened her car door. He stopped a distance away, as if purposely giving her space. But his gaze slipped over her sweater and pleated skirt, the old plaid book bag at her side, and all the way down to her low-heeled pumps before moving back up to her face.

Though she probably should have gotten defensive or, at the very least, self-conscious, his penetrating scrutiny felt curious and pensive rather than judgmental or creepy.

Not to mention, being the object of his attention elicited a bright, hot glow in some deep part of her body that she hadn’t even known existed until now.

Well. Time to go home.

She tightened her hand on her keys. “Thanks again.”

His mouth curved with a faint smile. “Have a good night, Rhubarb Girl.”

After giving him a little wave, she got into her car and coaxed the old engine to life. He stood watching until she’d reached the exit of the parking lot. When she glanced in her rearview mirror again, he was gone.
