“Hey, either of you know about Grace Berry’s missing cat?”

“I’ve got a flyer up at the bookstore,” Sam said.

Jake took the flyer and studied it. “Does Aria Prescott know about this?”

“Grace got Viola from her,” Lincoln explained. “She’s been missing for about two weeks. Grace is pretty upset about it, obviously. She’s been leaving food and water out on the porch, but no luck. I checked a website that says to keep conducting physical searches and asking around even months after the cat goes missing. Some cat forums even mention setting humane traps.”

Sam was looking at him strangely. “I guess you’re helping look then, huh?”

Clearing his throat, Lincoln shrugged. “Not like there’s much of anything else to do around here.”

“Can I keep this?” Jake waved the flyer. “I’ll ask around.”

“Sure. Thanks.” He extended his hand to the other man. “Good meeting you. And you do whatever you want with the movie. I’m the wrong guy to ask.”

Faint disbelief flashed in Jake’s eyes. “No problem. Thanks for your time.”

Ignoring a stab of guilt, Lincoln nodded goodbye to his brother and headed for the cash register. He paid the bill, adding extra in case Sam and Jake wanted another round. Now that he’d left the table, the two men were laughing again over some private joke.

Lincoln couldn’t remember the last time he and Sam had laughed about anything. If they ever had.

He walked out into the cold night air. His shoulder ached. Grace’s voice drifted through his mind again.

I’m not interested in a romantic relationship with you or anyone else.

Her blunt remark should have been a relief. He wasn’t interested in a relationship with her either. Even if he had been, he was the wrong guy for her in a thousand ways.

All the more reason he had to keep his distance before he did something he’d regret.
