He set his cup down hard. “A mistake.”

“Oh, please. Like our first kiss was? You’re too deliberate for that kind of mistake. You’re having second thoughts. You don’t think you can handle it now, do you?”

The question popped out before she could stop it. Lincoln shoved away from the table and stood.

“I came here to settle some things with my brother.” He grabbed his keys from the kitchen counter. “That’s it. Since I’m not writing a book right now, the teaching gig is ausefulway to spend my time. But in no world did I imagine that my stay in Bliss Cove would involve deflowering a Shakespeare teacher and then walking away.”

Irritation prickled her spine. “So you’re just going to walk away? That appears to be what you’re best at. Why? Are you afraid of actually getting involved?”

He shot her a glare. “Find a nice guy, Grace. A boyfriend. Someone who isn’t me.”

“Oh, for god’s sake. I’m asking for your body, Lincoln. Not your heart.”

He turned and strode to the door, his shoulders rigid. Regret speared through her.

“Lincoln.” She pushed to her feet and hurried after him. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that I only want you as a…astudor whatever. Obviously I care about you or I wouldn’t be asking, but I’m a realist. It’s not only about my virginity either. I want to see you and touch you and…oh, this is all wrong.”

“Damn right it’s wrong.”

He stalked out of the house. The door slammed shut behind him.
