Maybe her and Lincoln’s eventual separation would be less painful if she created a bit of distance between them now. Not a chasm, but a small crack. Some breathing room. To remind herself, and her heart, of the parameters she had established.

To stop the wild hurtle from “I don’t want a relationship” to “Take my virginity, please” to “Whoa, this is mind-blowing,” and straight into “I love you.” The vertical ascent combined with the twists and turns were making her dizzy.

Lincoln brushed his thumb across her cheek. “I can hear you thinking.”

“I can hear your plane taking off.”

She lifted her gaze to his. He was watching her, his expression serious.

“Planes fly in both directions.” He settled his hand on the side of her neck. “To and from. Away and—”

His voice broke off.

Home.

But Bliss Cove wasn’t home, not for him. And she’d been so certain, so blunt, about what she wanted from him. What she expected. The last thing she could do now was turn everything upside down by declaring love, of all things.

What did she think would happen, anyway? Everything about them was so different. He fit in her kitchen, but she didn’t want him to fit into her life. She’d known he couldn’t. And his life would swallow her up.

She stood on tiptoe and kissed him. “I’ll see you at school.”

She turned and walked to her car before he could respond. Walking away from him for even one night was painful. How would she be able to walk away from him for good?

Or worse…to watch him walk away from her?
