“You’re obviously far better equipped than I am to handle it, but I got an idea of why he’s been struggling. He knows he needs to be the one to explain, so he said he’ll come to school early next Monday to talk to you.”

“He’s coming to my classroom?”

“Yeah, I suggested it.” He drew his eyebrows together. “Is that a problem?”

“Maybe.” She rubbed her temple. “In addition to the grade issue, the Olivers accused me ofcorruptingTodd with a curriculum that includes Aphra Behn’s poetry. Obviously, I said he could write about another topic, but considering the circumstances, it’s probably best if I don’t meet with him alone.”

“Wait a second.” An edge hardened his voice. “Corrupting?”

“Mrs. Oliver took issue with the sexual content in some of the poems.” Grace waved her hand. “I gave Todd alternative assignments, not that he did those either. But I still think I shouldn’t be alone with him.”

Lincoln muttered a curse. “I’m sorry. I had no idea. I wouldn’t have suggested it, if I had.”

“It’s okay.” Grace scrolled on her phone.

“I’ll be there.”

“No, I think it’s better if it’s teachers only, for protocol if nothing else. I’ll ask Erica to be present.” She checked her Monday calendar. “And thank you for talking to Todd. I haven’t been able to reach him all year.”

She wasn’t surprised that Lincoln had gotten through to the boy, even if Todd still had major issues. Lincoln’s combination of both authority and warm approachability had been like a magnet to the students. Toeveryone.

She slipped her phone back into her bag. He went into situations knowing he would walk away. But did he ever think about how hard it was for people to let him go?
