Obliterating the Gardenia House and library. If it got around that theHex or Hoax?episode planned to debunk the existence of Captain Marcus’s ghost, then Bee really would lose.

But as of right now…she was still in the game.

She briefly considered raising her hand and asking Marilyn about her alleged affair with Clyde Constantine but couldn’t bring herself to do it.

Publicly embarrassing Marilyn wasn’t the way she wanted to win, and it certainly wouldn’t endear her to the people who were on Marilyn’s side. Which appeared to be most of the town.

And Bee could no longer convince even herself that Marilyn was completelywrongin proposing that the Bliss Cove community might be better served by having library facilities in a more secure, accessible building.

But Marilyn not being wrong still didn’t mean it was right to sacrifice the Gardenia House. And Bee had a perpetual knot in her stomach at the thought of losing her job and possibly having to leave Bliss Cove.

Marilyn turned to take questions from the rest of the crowd. She seemed to have an answer for everything from taxes to the Media and Tech Center’s board of directors. After another half hour, Mayor Bowers drew the meeting to a close.

Aria squeezed Bee’s hand. “Come on. Let’s grab drinks at the Mousehole.”

Though part of Bee just wanted to go home and be in a funk with Edgar Allan Crow, she didn’t have time to sit around and feel sorry for herself.

Despite Adam’s dismissal as the director of the episode, the “hoax” conclusion wasn’t a done deal. There was still a chance it could change.

She couldn’t go to the producers to plead her case—even if she did, they wouldn’t care—but shecouldgive them more incontrovertible evidence.

“I’m sorry, I can’t.” She turned to give Aria a quick hug. “I have to get ready for Halloween.”

Before her friends could ask her about her plans, she picked up her bag and hurried to the doors.

Whatever she was going to do, she had to start figuring it out now. This wasn’t a movie, and the townspeople weren’t going to suddenly rally around her and the Gardenia House without a good reason.

So she needed to give them one. Moreover, she needed to remind them that Captain Marcus’s ghost was as much a part of Bliss Cove as the house itself.

And to do that, she needed proof that could not be denied…even by a hard-core scientist.
