“I ordered coffee and pastries for the crew and library staff,” he explained, indicating the van. “And there’s a box of Morning Glory muffins for you.”

“How did you know those are my favorite?”

“I asked the bakery owner.” He shot her a quick smile. “She said you stop by for a Morning Glory muffin every Tuesday morning, so I figured you’d like some any day of the week.”

Bee’s heart lifted like a little butterfly. “Thank you.”

Though a tiny part of her wished that he wouldn’t do nice, considerate things—for no other reason than it would be easiernotto be so attracted to him—that was one of the main reasons she liked him so much. Even after their coffee mishap, he’d been kind and helpful underneath his scowl.

As they went into the library, Bee started to walk to the circulation desk. Something made her stop, and she turned.

En route to the conference room, Adam had also stopped. A current pulled between them, something almost tangible, as if it were trying to keep them from parting.

Bee suddenly didn’t want to leave his side. She didn’t want to wait another nine or ten hours to be alone with him again.

Well, that’s silly.

Forcing herself to lift her hand, she gave him a little wave. “See you later.”

He blinked as if shaking himself out of a trance. “Right. Later.”

“Honey Bee!” trilled a throaty voice.

Bee snapped her attention to Destiny as she sailed toward them in a magnificent magenta caftan patterned with green paisley. Though she was smiling, her eyes shot icicles at Adam, and she stepped between them like a brick wall protecting Bee from harm.

“Hi, Destiny.” Bee brought her hand to the black tourmaline stone she was still wearing. Since Adam hadn’t turned away yet, she tried to make another polite introduction. “Um, Destiny, you remember Adam Powers.”

“Who could forget Adam?” Destiny bared her teeth in an approximation of a smile. “Do you mind telling me your birthday?”

“January fifth.”

“Ah.” Pursing her lips, Destiny nodded with sagacity. “Overachiever. Determined…yes, some strong traits of a Caprico—”

Her voice broke off. She whipped her gaze to Bee in horror.

“I’ve gotta get to work.” Adam started backing toward the conference room, catching Bee’s gaze. “I’ll text if I need anything.”

She nodded, regretting his absence before he was even out of her sight.

“ACapricorn?” Destiny shook her head so hard her black curls flew around her like smoke. “No. It cannot be.”

“There are thousands of Capricorns in the world,” Bee reminded her. “Millions.”

“But him?” She pulled her tablet out of her bag and powered it up. “Your Juno sign with his negative energy? It doesn’t make any sense.”

Bee stepped toward the circulation desk. “I need to work right now too. Maybe we can talk about this later?”

“I’m going to do some recalibrations.” Destiny swiped the tablet screen, her forehead furrowing. “But you still stay away from him. And don’t forget your lunch date with Scott tomorrow. He’ll be waiting for you at the Mousehole. One o’clock sharp.”

Bee winced. “I really can’t—”

“Listen, Honey Bee.” Destiny pierced her with a stare. “Just because Adam could ice your cake like a master baker doesn’t mean you should hand him a spatula. And canceling on Scott will cause serious damage to your karma which, by the way, has always been exceptional.”

Though Bee was all about maintaining both her excellent karma and credit rating, she didn’t think it was at all fair to go out with Scott when she was lusting after Adam. Even if she and Adam had gone through a whole rigmarole about being just friends.

That “just friends” thing had lasted all of three hours. And true to Adam’s claim that science had nothing to do with friendship, their hot kissing experiment hadn’t exactly screamed,“Hey, buddy, let’s grab a beer and shoot some pool.”

With a sigh, Bee dug her phone out of her bag. She had to get this all in hand before it started getting away from her.

“All right,” she told Destiny. “I’ll figure something out about Scott.”

Destiny nodded and started toward the doors. “Good. I’ll message you soon about my new calibrations.”

Bee murmured a goodbye, wondering if she could conduct her own experiment involving Adam, cake, and a whole bowl of chocolate icing. Not to mention a spatula or two.
