“That’s very romantic.” Adam closed the journal and set it back on the desk. “But what does it have to do with the ghost?”

“I think she’s the reason he’s still here,” Bee said. “Millicent Pepper is Captain Marcus’s unfinished business.”

He considered that, a crease appearing between his eyebrows. “Okay. So that’s a great story, but if I write it into the script, then I need an explanation of what he needs to do to finish his business, so to speak. How is he trying to get himself untrapped?”

“I don’t know yet.” Bee rubbed the small of her back.

As much as she liked finding new things in her research, this discovery went against everything she’d believed about Captain Marcus. He wasn’t, in fact, a happy-go-lucky ghost who traipsed around singing sea shanties because he enjoyed it.

He was here because he couldn’t go anywhere else. Because he had no choice.

Maybe the stars didn’t just align for phenomena like One True Loves. Maybe right now, the constellations were shifting and moving to indicate that Bee Delaney was meant to help Captain Marcus complete whatever it was he needed to do.

Maybe she was the one who was supposed to help set him free.
