“You have jokes. There’s a huge population of black people in Oklahoma City.”

“I’m from DC and now live in Atlanta. Huge is definitely relative.” His eyes widened comically when the horse started walking. “Shit. Can you warn me next time?”

The young man quickly apologized, “Sorry, Mister. He’s trained to walk the moment you are seated. Do you need me to walk next to you?”

“No,” Bakari replied proudly.

My horse followed Majestic. I reassured Bakari and the handler. “We’ll be fine. You can stay back and rest until your next guests are ready.”

He tipped his worn baseball cap. “You’re sure, Miss? The Mister looks like a handful.”

I watched Bakari ahead on the horse, grimacing with every step the horse took. “He is, but I believe I can handle it.” And as I caught up to Bakari, I was confident that I could deal with the outcome; however, this experience ended. Until he looked back at me and reached for my hand. Well, almost confident.
