“I would pay so much money to see that look of terror on your face again, and you were never in any real danger.”

Bakari nodded. “Bet.”

“Bet?” The instructor gently pushed me to the edge of the hill. My stomach lurched watching the fresh springs flowing over rocks and through the lush jungle several feet below. I gripped the bars above me tight. “What does that mean?”

“The way you’re about to look in a few seconds.”

“Wait...wait...I’m not ready.” I pleaded with the native man who managed the course.

He looked past my shoulders at Bakari and then grinned. “You will be fine, miss.” He then pushed harder, and I screamed when the stable ground left my feet. I went through the air so fast that I finally understood “zip.” I closed my eyes, afraid that staring down would somehow compel me to fall.

“Open your eyes, Nikki,” Bakari called from behind me. “Enjoy the experience.”

I fought the urge to keep them closed, but my nagging brave inner voice prevailed. And watching Mother Nature from above engendered an unexpected serenity instantly. This was life. This was celebrating what God created. Soaring above the quiet waters and the ever-green foliage of the island. Being in a busy city surrounded by primarily manufactured structures and humans lost in their own lives, we forget about the natural gifts all around us. My grip loosened, and I looked up into the heavens. “Do you see me, Mama? I can finally forgive God.”

When I landed on the other side, the guide smiled kindly as he adjusted my harness, preparing me for the next course. My tears flowed freely down my cheeks. This time I was ready.
