“I just want to make sure she’s okay,” Thomas grumbled.

“I’m just joking. I’m sorry, man,” Dylan said as he rested a hand on his shoulder comfortingly. “Hey Lily, how you doing after the other night? Hadley mentioned you were having nightmares,” Dylan said as he offered me a thin-lipped smile before he glanced at Bug quickly.

“Yeah, I’m okay now. A few nightmares,” I admitted. “I’m just worried by it all. How did such a demon get past the High Council if they vet them all?”

“Who knows. Maybe they’re just super slack,” Dylan said with a shrug.

“Or corrupt,” Thomas muttered what we’d all been thinking. We’d discussed it over meals on occasion, but Miss Sage had shut down the conversations quickly, saying there was no concrete proof, and that Dezikiel was figuring it out.

Not that anyone had heard from him since he’d left.

“I’m worried though. There’s been heaps more demon activity in the local area, hence why Miss Sage is even sending us students out. It’s going crazy out there,” Dylan said as he folded his arms, his eyes flickering with concern. “I even heard her and Mr. Baron speaking about how a rip must’ve opened up nearby, but they were really worried. Hence why they got Hadley and Diane to amp up all the wardings on the place. Something has got them scared,” he murmured the last part as his frown deepened.

“Why are you talking about us?” Hadley asked as she entered the room with Diane.

Did we have some grand beacon in here drawing everyone to the library all of a sudden?

“Just talking about the wardings you guys put up,” Dylan stated.

“Yep, the academy has angel warding all over it, but clearly something more is going on since Charlie’s demon thing got summoned easily. Maybe the wardings are old or something. They’re meant to stop any unwelcome demonics and demons from entering the grounds. Only those given access by the High Council can enter. But since that hasn’t worked, Miss Sage asked us to ward the place too,” Hadley confirmed.

“Except it wasn’t just demonic,” Thomas added.

“Yeah, which is why it’s even more bizarre. What the hell kind of demonic monster has angelic grace? Wish we could just figure that out,” Hadley muttered. “Our wardings will pick up anything unwelcome trying to cross onto the grounds. Angelic, demon, human, all of them.”

“Good, we need that,” Dylan said with a firm nod.

“Do you think Miss Sage knows more than she’s letting on if she asked you guys to do that?” Thomas asked.

“Maybe. I do feel like they’ve been hiding something from us these past few days,” Hadley admitted as she glanced over her shoulder, as if she expected our teacher to manifest randomly.

“Still can’t believe Dezikiel is an actual angel and not just an angelic,” Thomas whistled. “That’s insane.”

“I’m glad he is. Angels are powerful, and having one on our side is a good thing,” Diane stated.

“You and Hadley already knew though, didn’t you?” Dylan asked, and the sisters nodded. “Why didn’t you say anything?”

“They’d rather us not tell. Not too sure why,” Diane said softly.

“I read somewhere that the Academies used to be run by fallen angels until they switched over to angelics. I’ve always wondered if he’s a fallen one ever since we figured out what he was,” Hadley murmured.

“How’d you learn what he was?” I asked. My hellhounds had known because of what they were, but I wasn’t sure how the sisters knew.

“He told us when he wanted us to start learning to use our magic against angelics. Said he doubted we’d ever need to fight angelics, but just in case,” Hadley explained.

“Makes you wonder if he thought the High Council was corrupt too,” Dylan mused.

“How would he have fallen?” Bug spoke up, clearly having been listening in.

“Who knows, can be a million reasons why really,” Hadley said with a shrug.

“How could Charlie summon forth something that was also angelic?” Thomas said as he shook his head, perplexed.

“Do you think angels and demons are teaming up? That’s the only thing that makes sense really. Demons can’t just steal angel grace. He said Baal wanted you dead,” Hadley murmured as she focused on me.

“And the angels don’t want you around either due to you being the daughter of a Prince of Hell,” Dylan added, causing all eyes to flick to him.

“How do you know that?” Diane gaped at him.
