“Xander gave me a ring my father gave to him. He reached out to him when he returned to earth, he wanted him to watch over me and keep him updated on me,” I said, my voice wavering as Dezikiel frowned.

“Well, that’s worrying,” Jophiel murmured.

“Why?” I asked in shock.

“He infiltrated the Academy as a spy essentially. Even if it was with good intentions and what he says is true, that’s concerning for all the Academies. How do we know we can trust him?” Jophiel said as he stood up and straightened his tie.

My stomach lurched at this. Did they really think Xander could cause us problems?

“I believe we can. He has never given us any reason we can’t. Did he tell you anything else?” Dezikiel asked, his expression masked.

“He said that my father said he was to give it to me when the time came. When I sprouted wings as I’d need help to understand my other side,” I explained. “It’s my mother’s wedding ring.”

“Are you positive it is?” Jophiel questioned with a dubious look.

“Yes, I’m certain,” I said with a firm nod. I recognized it instantly.

“Have you put it on?” Dezikiel queried.

I paused at this, staring at the ring like it was suddenly a viper coiled in my hand.

What would happen if I put it on?

“No, I haven’t,” I murmured.

“Could be risky,” Jophiel warned.

“Your father protected you, correct?” Dezikiel checked, and I nodded. “And you trust Xander?”

I nodded again. He’d given me no reason to not trust him.

“Then you should put it on,” Dezikiel suggested.

Jophiel was silent as he watched me curiously while I twisted the ring between my fingers.

Just how would it help me anyway?

There was only one way to find out.

My hellhounds were behind me, waiting while the two angels gazed at me expectantly. Time to see if it was actually helpful.

I sucked in a breath as I slid the ring onto the middle finger of my right hand, finding it to be a perfect fit.

I closed my eyes, a strange energy pulsing from it and shooting through my body. It snaked through me with a calming, comforting sensation, and I relaxed. I could practically feel the golden power coursing through me, and my wings revealed themselves once more as my mind was opened.

Knowledge and power overwhelmed me, filling my mind and body as I opened my eyes, blinded by the golden-white light.

I felt a connection to my mother, and her voice rang out in my mind as clear as day.

‘You are the key to saving the world’.
