“Joshua, one of the oldest.”

“That old bastard is so boring,” Lucifer groaned. “Always tending to his damn garden.”

I could practically feel Chum wanting to question them about the infamousSupernaturalshow and the similarities. But considering both these archangels had been retired for a while, I doubted they’d know about it, and thankfully Chum didn’t bring it up.

“I’d heard Remiel passed when she was struck down by a Prince of Hell, although she was able to take him out with her,” Michael mused over his teacup.

“Astaroth, I remember feeling him pass. None of his brothers knew why. Guess he went off alone to seek her out. Then again, Asmodeus kept everything quiet too.” Lucifer clucked his tongue as he reached for some cheese and crackers. “If this was Remiel, one of the archangels, how’d he take her out at the same time? I mean, I made my Princes strong as shit, but they should’ve still been weaker than a damn archangel of her caliber,” he scoffed.

“My mother was an archangel?” I balked. She’d not told me that when I’d seen her. I looked to Jack, and he grimaced.

“Jackiel did tell us that once you’d left, we haven’t had a chance to tell you,” he said softly, and I just sat back in my seat. My mother had been an archangel.

“Remiel was our sister, one of the original angels who was promoted to archangel. I knew she was cast out of Heaven and considered Fallen, but that happened once I was retired, and my brothers were handling it. I imagine it was likely to her speaking out about the impending Armageddon, but I’m not sure. I should’ve looked into it more, but I trusted my brothers,” Michael gave me an apologetic look, but I was still wrapping my head around it. My mother had been one of the first angels brought into being.

“Anyway, the longer an angel is away from Heaven, the weaker their link to it becomes, their powers decreasing. They would’ve cut her off from Heaven’s power, so she would have had a limited supply. Replenishing angel grace when not linked to Heaven is not easy,” Michael shared as he set his teacup down.

I took another sip of mine, my chest tight as I thought about my mother. I wanted to be mad at Michael for not doing more to help my mother, but it was pointless. I may have never been born if he’d gotten involved, or met my hellhounds.

I jumped as the glowing Michael double appeared, dragging an elderly man with him who looked like he belonged on a farm with his weathered features and overalls.

“Ah, Joshua, glad you could join us,” Michael rose and offered his seat to the man.

“Don’t think I had much of a choice really. Lucifer,” he said, turning to the devil and giving him a nod as he sunk into the offered seat. “You believe you have the Divine Key?”

“Yes, Lily here, a hybrid of our kind. Remiel saw visions that she’d be the one to stop the war, stop Armageddon from happening,” Michael filled him in as Joshua rolled his lazy green eyes over my hellhounds and me and sucked his teeth.

“Possibly,” Joshua said as he cocked his head at me. “Come, child, let’s see if all the fuss is for good reason.” He offered out his hands, and I looked to Jack as I rose, seeing the uncertainty blazing in his eyes along with my other men.

“It’ll be okay,” I assured them, knowing they wanted to demand answers and find out what was going to happen. But they were smart enough to know silence was best in the presence of these two archangels.

I moved around the table to Joshua, and I pursed my lips as I eyed his rather frail looking hands.

“It’s okay, young one. I won’t do anything, I’m just going to see the truth about you. As a prophet of the Lord, it was my job to transcribe prophecies. I was the one who wrote the ancient text on the Divine Key, having seen all the possible apocalypses that could befall our world, and making sure they were documented,” he explained. His soft, sincere smile did ease the tightness in my muscles, and I reached out to take hold of his hands.

My skin prickled as his angel grace touched mine, his eyes glowing softly.

“Lily?” Jack growled softly as he rose.

“I’m fine,” I assured him. “Everything’s fine.”

Joshua’s hands tightened against mine, and the creases in his forehead softened as he smiled.

“You are right, young one. Everything will be fine.”
