Before I answered, I finished another beer before pouring yet another.

“Why do you ask?”

“I just always got the feeling that the two of you had feelings for each other but were too afraid to act on them, and here you are asking if Grace is single, so I’m curious.”

I sighed. The alcohol had loosened my lips just enough that I came out with, “I hooked up with Grace after your medical school graduation party.”

Shit, Alex… why did you say that? What if Grace didn’t want him to know. Well too late now. I face palmed and muttered some choice swear words under my breath as Duncan just stared at me with a shocked look on his face.

“Sorry, I shouldn’t have said anything. I need to stop drinking.” I took a long swig from my glass and finished it off.

“Wait, so we’re talking… four years ago?”

“Yeah, about that, I guess. Do you think Grace will ever forgive me for just running away afterward?”

Duncan leaned back in his seat and just stared at me. He didn’t speak for a long time before saying. “Alex, it’s imperative you call Grace.”

“I planned on it, but why do you say it like that, man? Everything okay?”

“It’s not my business, I should stay out of this, but you need to talk to Grace. That’s all I’m going to say.”

“But she’s okay, right?”

“She’s…okay, yes. But there’s stuff going on in her life, and I think she needs you.”

Chapter 6

Grace

Ollie’s lashes were thick and long and surrounded the biggest brown eyes I had ever seen. I remembered thinking before that Alex had the most beautiful lashes I had ever seen, and how unfair it was for a man to have lashes that any woman would kill for. His son inherited that from him.

I stroked his dark hair as he slept peacefully in the bed. The beeps and hospital sounds didn’t even phase him; he slept as if the room was quiet all around him.

My own eyes were growing heavy. I hadn’t slept in twenty-four hours. I was on the verge of losing my job, I knew it was only a matter of time before Dr. Rogers would have to replace me, but I wasn’t going to leave Ollie’s side no matter what. My stomach growled, reminding me of other needs that had gone unmet, but I couldn’t be bothered to step away from my son’s bedside.

My phone buzzed in my pocket, and I pulled it out.

“Hey, Duncan,” I answered.

“Tell me about Ollie’s dad, Grace.”

Those words perked me right up. I sat upright then found myself standing, pacing the room as I nibbled my fingernail. “What do you mean?”

“Who is it?”

“I told you—”

“Yeah, you told me he’s not in the picture, and that it was a one-night stand. You know who it is, don’t you?”

A knot formed in my throat.

“Yes…” My voice barely came out as a whisper.

“Who is it, Grace?”

“It’s…it’s…” For some reason, I couldn’t say his name. Not to Duncan. Admitting the truth was so hard, and yet, I wasn’t sure why. Maybe because I knew Duncan would be so disappointed in Alex for disappearing, but why did I care to protect Alex now? Why did I care so much for a man who couldn’t even be bothered to return my calls?

Turned out, I didn’t have to be the one to say it. Duncan did.
