“Fuck, I don’t remember you being this . . .”

“This smart? This confident? This beautiful? This charming? You’ll have to be a bit more specific.” Emma laughed.

He grumbled something under his breath that sounded like “Need your ass spanked.” He grabbed his water and brought it to his lips.

A thrill of molten desire rocketed through her. She’d push him a little further. “Not everyone can keep up with me. It’s okay—happens to the best of them. Takes a firm hand and a very good tongue to get my mouth under control.”

Water spewed from his mouth, dribbling down his shirt as he choked. He set the bottle in the cup holder and coughed a few times.

After he’d caught his breath, she shrugged. “See? Not everyone can rise to the challenge.”

He reached out and grabbed her wrist. She gasped at the sudden connection.

“Trust me. Rising isn’t the problem.” His gaze darted to her leather bracelet hiding her scars and tugged at it. “I bet one tat is under here. Is it so bad you keep it hidden?”

Panic seized her chest as she ripped her arm away. “How about your love life? Seeing anyone?”

“No.”

Has he been with anyone since me? Not that it really mattered, because they were not together.

The air in the car grew thick despite his window being down. They’d done a great job of avoiding talking about that night, but today’s conversation had brought the awkwardness to the forefront. Maybe she should bring it up and put it all out there. Why couldn’t she try and enjoy her time with him to the fullest? The best way to do that was to get rid of the elephant in the room.

“How do you think Dad would feel knowing his ashes were in the trunk for this road trip?” Emma asked.

“Do you think we should bring him up front with us?” Link’s voice held a hint of humor. It had worked.

“Just the back seat. You know he’d hate that.” She laughed.

Solomon had only ever sat in the driver’s seat, except for the one time Link had had to drive him home after his cataract surgery. He’d never let them hear the end of that either.

“Serves him right for sending us on this wild goose chase,” Link added.

Emma turned towards the window. Trees and flat open farmland whipped by. “I don’t know. I think this might have been a good idea, after all.”

After a beat of silence, Link sighed. “Yeah, maybe it’s not so bad.”

Emma smiled. A warmth surged, filling her chest with liquid sunshine. Perhaps her dad had known all along that they needed this trip to make things right. And just maybe Solomon had a few more surprises up his sleeve.

Link balanced the bag of takeout and drinks in one hand and knocked on Emma’s door with the other. He surveyed the mostly empty parking lot around them, somewhere in bumfuck Nebraska.

“Come in!”

Come in? What the fuck—?

He twisted the knob and frowned. She hadn’t locked it. He stormed inside and set the food on the small dresser holding the old TV. “Why the fuck isn’t the door locked?”

“I knew you were coming over and didn’t want to make you wait if I was still in the shower,” she huffed.

He turned to face her, his mouth dropping open. Emma’s wet hair stuck to her face on the sides. Water dripped, pooling in the cleft under her chin. Nothing but a tiny, cheap motel towel was wrapped around her, not leaving much to his imagination. Her perky tits were squished together, overflowing from the top of the white terry cloth.

His hands itched to pull it away from her, exposing every delectable inch for him to explore with his tongue. He licked his lips as his cock stood to attention.

“Like what you see?”
