“I’ll go grab those,” he said, grabbing an extra package of pads.

“Sometimes her body will crave chocolate around her period because of the magnesium in it. Are you okay if we go get some salty and sweet snacks? My treat,” Pippa said.

His sapphire orbs flicked between Aspen and her before he nodded. “I’ll be right up.”

She led Aspen to a section near the front, and they picked out a packet of chips. “Which chocolate is your favorite?”

“I like Twixes.”

“Mmm. Caramel and chocolate. Wise choice. I’m a Reese’s girl myself.” Pippa leaned down to pet Lady’s head.

“What’s her name?” Aspen asked as she followed Pippa to the end of the aisle.

“Lady.”

“Are you going to get in trouble for having her in the store?” Aspen peeked over her shoulder.

Pippa glanced towards the front, studying the cashier as a man with a hoodie approached the counter, hands in his pocket. “No, Lady is a—”

“Put the money in the bag or I’ll blow a fucking hole in your head.” The man in the hoodie spoke just loud enough for Pippa to hear.

Chills skated over her skin. Her heart raced in panic. Lady whined and barked once. The robber spun to face them.

Pippa grabbed Aspen’s hand and shoved her behind her, hiding her beyond the endcap—out of view of the front of the store.

The gun swerved her way. “You better keep that bitch on her leash.”

Pippa’s other hand tightened on Lady’s harness as she nodded and got down to her knees. The thief turned back to the cashier, switching between watching her and the scared man behind the register.

“Hurry up!” he ordered.

Pippa’s body trembled. Lady started barking and alerting. “Shhhhh.” She petted her. “It’s okay, girl. Sit.”

The thief ripped the bag away from the cashier and walked towards Pippa, gun once again aimed her way. “You deaf, bitch? I told you to keep that mutt quiet.”

Pippa’s chest heaved. If he came any closer, he’d see Aspen. She pressed her hand against the trembling little girl beside her, trying to push her farther away from danger.

“N-no. My dog’s just scared.” She risked a glance at his blue eyes. His pupils were the size of pinpoints.

The thief’s arm lifted. The metal glinted in the florescent lights. “Maybe I should give her something to be scared about.”

“No!” Pippa screamed as terror gripped her chest in its icy fingers.
