AARON

Aaron shook Ryan’s hand.

“I’ll get the digital copy of these photos to you later this week for the website,” he informed him.

“Thank you very much.” Aaron nodded, then turned around, searching for Dani. He wanted a minute alone with the girl to let her know no matter what happened between Brynn and him, he’d be there for her. Hopefully Brynn wouldn’t fight the one stipulation he’d added to their divorce papers—that Dani be kept on his health insurance plan.

“Aaron.”

Aaron turned toward the brisk deep voice of Blade, the leader of the local Pirates MC, who nodded towards the side of the tree, away from the few festivalgoers glancing curiously at them.

Aaron followed him, his gaze snagging on the scar that ran from his forehead, down his cheek.

Blade ran a hand over his beard. “We got a problem.”

“What is it?” Aaron had worked with the Pirates several times before. His group had been there for a lot of the kids when they needed protection.

“Your wife.”

Panic streaked through Aaron. “What do you mean?”

“Brynn left here with a man, and it didn’t look voluntary. She mouthed help me to me. When I looked back, it was clear he was holding a weapon on her.”

The blood drained from Aaron’s face. “You didn’t follow her? We have to go!” Aaron stepped around Blade, but his friend held up his hands. “My men are already en route. I slipped my phone in her pocket to track them. He had a weapon, and if he’s crazy enough to kidnap a woman like that, he’s unstable enough to start shooting up the park. There was nothing I could do while she was in a public place. I had to get my guys on the other side of the park. Without my phone it took a few minutes.”

Aaron’s chest heaved. Brynn is in danger! I must get to her. “Take me to her!”

Blade ran with him to the street where Aaron had parked. “Give me your keys.”

Aaron handed them to his friend and jumped into his car. Blade started the ignition and peeled out of the parking spot. Aaron grabbed his phone, shooting Mason a quick text, telling him to take Dani home with him and not let her out of his sight.

Aaron’s shoulders inched up towards his ears. Adrenaline thrummed in his veins. Brynn was in danger, and he wasn’t there to protect her. He’d just spoken to her God damnit! I shouldn’t have let her go. But who would have taken her? His gut flipped. There was one man she’d worried would find her. One man wicked enough to take a woman away at gunpoint.

“I’m going to fucking kill him,” Aaron growled as they raced out of town.

“You need to keep your hands clean. You’re doing a lot of good work for this town. The kids need you. The last thing you want is to get your hands dirty and have it fall back on you. The boys and I will handle this. Understand? I can’t have you going out half-cocked.”

Trees whipped by as anxiety churned in Aaron’s gut. “If he’s hurt her, I can’t make any promises.”

Blade nodded. “Wouldn’t expect anything less.”

Two big trucks blocked both lanes ahead. Blade pulled over onto the shoulder of the road. Aaron’s eyes widened as he shoved his door open, then raced towards the scene in front of him.

Steam rose from a wrecked car, upside down in the ditch on the side of the road. Four armed men in leather cuts surrounded a bleeding older man who looked vaguely familiar. He was the man Aaron had seen outside the bookstore. One of them stood by a shaking Brynn, speaking softly to her.

Aaron’s heart stuttered. Brynn.

“She shot me!” the pale man being held by one of The Pirates said as Aaron and Blade approached.

“She got the drop on you with her hands bound? Sounds like a warrior to me.” Blade’s voice was deadly.

Aaron’s gaze dropped to Brynn’s zipped hands as rage lit his veins on fire. He raced towards her. The glint of metal in her hands made him freeze. Brynn trembled, her eyes vacant and glassy, as if she was in shock.

“You don’t understand. She’s my wife. She took everything from me. I need to bring her back. She must be punished for what she’s done.”

His wife? This was Paul, her ex. He’d known where she was. He’d been watching her. And I missed it. Fuck!
