He smiled. “Great. Anything else?”

She licked her lips and her gaze darted to the floor. “No, you’ve already done enough.”

“Come on. We’re together for a year. If money wasn’t an object, what would you buy?” A dress? Some sparkling jewelry? He’d love to buy it all for her. Gifting things was quickly becoming his favorite thing to do.

“I’d like to get my GED.”

Wow. It wasn’t something he could buy, but he’d still love to help her. “I have some study books at Hope. I’ll bring them home for you.”

“I would appreciate that.” She gave him a small smile, and a burst of warmth socked him in the chest. Earning one of her smiles was like winning the goddamned lottery.

“To get Danielle’s name and gender change on her birth certificate, we’ll need a doctor to fill out some paperwork. Should we expect any problems from her biological father?”

The ghost of a smile immediately disappeared. Aaron hated to bring it up, but he needed to be prepared for the battle that lay ahead.

Brynn shook her head, her gaze darting up to him and then down to his chest, as if she was too ashamed to look him in the eyes.

“No, he’s not on her birth certificate. Only the first wife gets that honor.” Her mouth clamped closed, and her eyes widened as she looked up at him, as if she was horrified the truth had passed her lips.

Other wives? What the fuck did that mean? The more pieces to the puzzle of Brynn he found, the more questions it raised, and none of them were comforting.

But he wouldn’t press. The wedding and the move had clearly taken a toll on her. And she was at least able to be in the same room as him without looking like she wanted to flee. And now she was giving pieces of herself to him, bit by bit. A change of subject was in order.

“Do you like spicy food?” He motioned to the Chinese restaurant menu on the island in front of him.

Her shoulders relaxed, gratitude shining in her eyes. “I like the hot wings from the diner that Fred makes.”

“Great. I’ll order dinner. Why don’t you go take a bath and relax. There are some Epsom salts under the sink. You put a cup in the water and it helps relax your muscles. By the time you’re done, the food should be here.” He pulled his phone from his pocket as she squinted at him, as if she couldn’t believe he was real, and then she nodded.

Whoever she’d been with before had done a number on her. And Aaron was going to enjoy undoing the damage one fractured piece at a time, until Brynn could hold her head up high with confidence and see the fucking fantastic, beautiful woman she was.
