“What do you make of it?” Roland rasped.

“Possibly Roman,” Terric replied. “Looks ancient, and the Romans occupied this area for many years.”

“To ward off marauders from the north,” Roland said with a smirk.

For a while, giant shadows moved against the walls; the aroma of roasted meat stole up Roland’s nostrils. His stomach growled, remembering Bradick’s venison. Gradually, all fell quiet. The torches remained lit but it appeared everyone had bedded down.

“I can’t see a guard, but they must have posted at least one,” Terric whispered.

Roland agreed. “Seems we’ll have to wait for another opportunity. This is too dangerous.”

“It’s an eerie place anyway,” Terric replied, making the sign of the Savior across his body. “Haunted, perhaps?”

“Could be,” Roland allowed as they slid down the bank, back to their rowboat hidden in the reeds.
