They settled into silence, and Kitty watched as Sophie and Lord Amberwood embraced again. A stab of yearning shot through her at the sight of the man gazing lovingly down at his wife. Would she ever find someone who would look at her like that? As much as her newfound ruined status had freed her in a way, she felt a stab of loneliness at the thought of never having a companion to share her life with.

“How about tonight?”

“Pardon?” She looked away from the romantic scene, noting with some embarrassment that her throat had caught a little on her reply.

The air of casual indifference remained around him, but something stirred in his dark eyes, something she couldn’t quite identify. “Vauxhall,” he replied. “Remember? You were quite put out over the matter just a few moments ago.”

The sight of his teasing smile pushed her melancholy aside, and she returned the gesture with an excited grin of her own. “Tonight, sounds lovely, Your Grace.”

He scowled. “Do stop calling me that.”

She only continued to smile. Sophie and Lord Amberwood strolled up, apparently finished with their passionate reunion, and her best friend looked at her with a curious smile. “Is His Grace bothering you, dear.”

“No, No. Just being his usual self.”
