“Someone like another member of the staff,” Sebastian concluded. “Things are even more dangerous than we thought.”

“I still don’t understand why they would try to kill Kitty. Wouldn’t that defeat the entire purpose of blackmailing her for money in the first place?” Sophie said.

“And if they are a member of the staff then they would know I haven’t got a feather to fly with,” her father said thoughtfully.

It was all so strange, and Kitty had a difficult time trying to reason out such bizarre criminal behavior. “Regardless of the mystery of it all, it’s obvious that the house is compromised,” she said, anxiety roaring to life within her at the thought of her attempted killer being so near. “It would also explain how they managed to get access to the carriage for tampering.”

“You’ll be far safer under my protection.” Sebastian looked down at her warmly. “Besides, I’m rather eager to get on with things.”

“Uh-uh,” Amberwood said dryly. “I was right.”

“I see you two have made up properly,” Barrow said as he produced the letter from his waistcoat and handed it to Mary. “I hope you gave him a good kick in the shins, Miss Highbridge.”

“I seem to recall you also having a hand in me coming to such erroneous conclusions, Barrow,” Sebastian said.

“You will also recall,” he shot back, “that I advised you to speak to Miss Highbridge properly after our conversation before making a judgement.”

If Kitty looked close enough, she thought she could see Sebastian’s ears reddening. “Yes, well,” she said with amusement, “I’ll have him grovel plenty once we are married.”

“I’d expect nothing less of you, my girl,” the baron said with a nod.

Sophie rose with a commanding clap. “We can argue about semantics later. Let us get to this wedding business. It is only morning, so we have time yet.”

Kitty exhaled in relief at Sophie’s prudent handling of the situation. Only a few hours more, and she would be safe from the criminal’s scheming. And married. To Sebastian. She snuck a peek up at her future husband, her face nearly flushing at the heated look he shot her from the corner of his eye. Kitty boldly met his gaze and was pleased to see a satisfied smirk spread across his face. She could only hope that they would continue to do so well together.
