Finally, the woman seemed to realize the precarious position she was in, hugging her arms and looking about as close to terror as he’d ever seen her. “What will you do?”

“Whatever I deem necessary as head of this house,” he said back. “Leave my sight at once.”

It was only when she’d disappeared down the dark hall and he’d heard the quiet sound of her door clicking shut that he allowed himself to relax. Unable to stop the sudden urge, he wrapped his arms around Kitty and pulled her into a tight embrace. “Forgive me, I should have been more diligent.” The thought that such machinations were occurring within his household and under his very nose was galling. “You were supposed to be safe here, and I have failed you.”

“Did you mean it?” Kitty mumbled into his chest, wrapping her arms around his waist.

“Mean what?”

She looked up at him, her brown eyes searching his face. “That you wouldn’t care if I ruined everything?”

“You couldn’t do anything that would make me regret marrying you,” he replied, his voice raw and earnest.

“Even if I gamble the duchy into the ground?”

He smiled. “Even if you gamble the duchy into the ground.”

“I won’t,” she replied quickly. “I was jesting.”

Sebastian chuckled and rested his chin on her head, looking more forward to the future than he had in a long time. “I know.”
