She lowered her lashes, as if hesitant to say what she was about to say. “Do not think atonement means denying yourself happiness.”

The words, coupled with the face of a certain woman, hit him like a wall. “I will do what I must to ensure respectability.”

“To be honest, I don’t give a fig about that,” Kitty replied bluntly. “Good people and respectable people are not always the same thing. Look at us, for example. Ashford and I ate barely tolerated, and Francesca’s husband owns a salacious club, for goodness sakes. Hardly paragons of the Ton.”

“Good deeds are enough,” Francesca added.

Could they be right? Perhaps his approach had been all wrong. He’d been so concerned about what society thought of him that he hadn’t considered if it was what Francesca and Kitty also believed. Did staying out of the gossip rags truly matter in the grand scheme of things?

The answer, he thought with an almost painful flutter of his heart, was a resounding no.
